How can we help our students learn to mend the world? The inspiring adventure story told in Three Cups of Tea and its related fund raiser, Pennies for Peace, will make our Maine young people aware of the lives of the children in the remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Greg Mortensen has spent the last 14 years building schools in remote mountain regions. He is an advocate for educating girls as well as boys.

We propose to have all students and teachers participate in a One School/One Book event, reading Mortensen's dramatic story together. All 8 of our public schools in the city will be working simultaneously on an all-district collaboration. At the elementary level, students will be read aloud the picture book version, Listen to the Wind. Middle school students will read the young adult version, and will participate in interdisciplinary units that will include a study of this little-understood part of the world, as well as mountaineering techniques.

In order to fully implement our plan, we need to be able to have each student and teacher receive a copy of the book. Students will: learn how physical systems affect human systems; understand how certain character traits enhance citizens' ability to fulfill personal and civic responsibilities; and understand the search for community, stability, and peace in an interdependent world. Students also will participate in a service learning component through Pennies for Peace that is the fund raising arm of Mortensen's work.

It is the villagers' belief that one becomes friends after sharing three cups of tea. Please help our students drink a cup of tea as they learn to make the world a better place. Join us for a cup of tea, too,
