Turning Dropouts into Successful College Freshmen

My students need two reference copies of each of three mathematics textbooks used at the local community college for use in high school tutoring, and to be checked out to college students in great financial need.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach twelfth grade English and Orientation to College to highly at-risk teenagers at a continuation high school near the US/Mexico border. Our kids are the most vulnerable population in a high school district that is already facing huge budget cuts, loss of property tax revenue, and increasing levels of community poverty. Every student who attends my school has been sent here by their comprehensive high school because they are deemed to be in danger of becoming a dropout. Students at my school face many challenges including substance abuse, poverty, abuse, gang affiliation, homelessness, pregnancy, and all the typical problems of any urban high school.

The students I teach have every reason to give up and drop out of high school. Yet despite all the challenges they face, our school boasts an ever growing graduation rate. On top of giving our students the support they need to graduate from high school, we have been working together to create a school culture that sends students on to college. We work with the local community college to offer courses on our campus. We help our student navigate the financial aid and admissions process to ensure lack of finances is never a limit to attending college. We offer a "lifetime guarantee" so that our graduates can return at any time for tutoring, to use computers, or just to talk. Math is a pressing problem for many of our students. While we offer tutoring for the students, we do not have the school funds to buy copies of the college text books for our teachers and tutors to use as a reference. We also have a handful of students who are undocumented. Attending college is very difficult for them, because they are not eligible for financial aid. Scholarships don't go far enough to pay for books, and most undocumented students drop out.

If we had copies of the three most common college math text books we could make a significant difference in the college success of many at-risk teens. First, we could provide focused tutoring to help students test higher on college placement tests.

Your gift is not only financial, it is a confidence builder for our whole school. Continuation high schools are last in line for a lot of things, and our kids know it. When a donor chooses us, the whole student body feels confidence knowing that someone believes in their potential to be successful. Your gift will directly make this community stronger by helping turn potential drop-outs into college graduates.
