This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a science teacher in California serving at risk and low performing students. Most of my students are low-income and come from homes where parents have no more than or less than a high school education. As a result of the state's budget cuts, I have 40 students and this quantity exceeds the room's capacity. Most of my students have difficulty understanding science because the majority have a reading and math level below the 6th grade. I teach 8th grade students and more than 30% have learning disabilities.

The problem I currently face is that I do not have calculators for 40 students in a class. I have about 200 students daily and because of their inability to do math and read at their grade level, science is divulged at an extremely slow pace.

If I had calculators to help my students in all my science classes it would expedite the math section found in science and we could concentrate on the science part, which seems to be very difficult for my particular students.

As a California science teacher I am facing overcrowded classrooms with more students that come from homes where many of their parents have lost their jobs and cannot purchase the supplies that I have requested from each student. Education in California has taken a back seat and funding for calculators is not in our school budget. If I can get calculators for my students, I could teach them how to use them to calculate speed, distance, and other measurements necessary for physical science
