Maniac Magee For 5th Graders

My students need 18 copies of "Maniac Magee" and one accompanying Teacher Guide.

Give the gift of great literature! I teach 5th grade at a Title I school in a high-need community. Specifically, I teach Reading, Math, Writing, and Social Studies.

Last week, my scripted reading curriculum was pulled, leaving me scrambling to find some good literature for my students to use.

I'd love to provide my students with a class set of Jerry Spinelli's "Maniac Magee," which won the Newberry Medal award in 1991. This book would be a wonderful book for my diverse class, as racial prejudice, and other important issues are explored. Students will use the text to explore how an author develops character, use graphic organizers to aid their comprehension of the sequence of events, draw pictures of the setting and important events in the story, and hold class discussions on the highly relevant thematic material presented by Spinelli. Students will also keep vocabulary journals to record new words, the sentences where the words were found, and synonyms that would function in place of the vocabulary word.

Your financial contribution will not only support me to excel as a first-year teacher, but will ensure that my students receive the materials they need to bridge the achievement gap. I aim to make my students LOVE reading, and with your help, I will do just that with these books!
