Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am hardworking and motivated first grade teacher that teaches all general education subjects to awesome students. My wonderful class is made up of more than 60% English language learners. 59% of our students at our school are socioeconomically challenged.

Have you ever sat in a class where you just sat and watched the teacher write? Well, there will be no more of that with Interactive writing! Interactive writing is widely used technique that involves students in the writing process. Students are the ones writing on poster paper. The teacher guides the class to think of ideas to write, and then the class dictates a message for students to write. Then students take turns writing on the poster paper. After the writing piece is finished, it is proudly displayed in the classroom. When it is displayed it gives students a feeling of ownership. I have tried interactive writing with students and the students love it, but I found that students who were not the ones writing on the board, were not getting enough practice.

Well, with these new magic writing boards, students will be able to write along with me and the student chosen to write on the poster paper. I would be able to make teaching points to the students on the carpet with their magic writing boards. They would be able to practice spelling and using punctuation with the student who is writing on the poster paper. If students make a mistake on the poster paper they will be able to make corrections with the nifty poster correction tape. This allows children to safely make mistakes without feeling like it is the end of the world when they make a mistake. Also, with the highlighting tape I would be able to highlight specific spelling patterns, sight words, and punctuation directly on the poster paper. The highlighting tape is a great way for visual learners to see patterns.

Let's change the way we write! Help make writing interactive and fun. Spark and light that fire for writing. Thank you!
