Audio Books for Reluctant Readers

Our school, located in a dense, urban neighborhood, is culturally and ethnically diverse. We have a high proportion of students with special needs, and many English language learners. It is well known that reluctant readers and English language learners benefit tremendously by listening to a fluent speaker reading a book aloud. Many of these students lack opportunities to hear books read aloud. In the school library our small collection of audio books is wildly popular with students. We are using a new format called a Playaway, an audio book and player combined in one small unit worn around the neck. The few audio books we have are checked out at all times and we need many more to meet the demand. Students check out the audio and print books together so they can follow along, or they can read before or after they listen. The audio book provides a boost to students who struggle with text. Many students are able to read at a higher level or better comprehend what they read with the help of the audio books. For reluctant or struggling readers, books are often a source of frustration, not pleasure. Audio gives children another way to access language, one that is enjoyable for them. Positive experiences with books and reading create lifelong readers. Your gift of audio books will ensure that many more of our students will experience the fun and joy of reading.
