Give Green to Grow Green: A Garden for All Children (Part 1)

My students need easy-to-use, adapted gardening tools and other basic gardening materials in order to engage in hands-on opportunities to learn, explore, interact with peers and help contribute to the healthy development of the school community in an overall environmentally conscious way.

I teach a group of 12 students with multiple disabilities and some with severe medical needs. Each of my students loves to come to school. It is a joy to teach this wonderful group of enthusiastic learners. I want to provide them with the best educational experience I possibly can. Most of my students are entitled to free lunch. Many of my students use wheelchairs and/or have several medical issues.

Our class would like to begin a new project called "A Very Special Garden for All Children." This exciting project would allow an opportunity for students to participate in simple gardening lessons, and horticulture therapy experiences. We would integrate many skills into these multi-sensory, hands-on lessons including language development, math skills, activities of daily living, social skills and so on. We would also integrate adaptive technology via a partnership with a local non-profit organization called Adaptive Design Association. Additionally, many classes in the school could benefit from the beautification of the school/community grounds. Due to the large scope and price of the project, we have split up the project into several proposals/phases. This proposal is phase one of our project. Proposals for subsequent phases will be posted at a later time. Please keep your eyes open.

Phase one of this large scale project includes obtaining basic gardening supplies and materials. We need materials such as those listed in the budget in order to lay the foundation for our garden. Adaptive Design Association (ADA) will aid us in building several adaptive mechanisms that will make ordinary gardening activities accessible to students with various physical and cognitive abilities. For example, ADA has pledged to help us build an adaptive mechanism for watering our plants, as well as an accessible, mobile "planting station" for the classroom that can be wheeled to the garden. The entire garden will be accessible to all children and have multi-sensory aspects so that students with a wide range of abilities and needs can enjoy the garden.

When you give green to our garden your green helps students grow. With your help, my students will have the opportunity to experience life long learning skills & science skills in a hands-on manner. They will have the opportunity to think critically and act as independent thinkers in our school. You can help empower my students to have a positive impact on our school community and the global environment as a whole. Thank you for this opportunity!
