Grades 3-5

Teaching is loving ; Learning is growing... I have been a teacher for 7 years teaching in grades K-4. Currently, I am teaching in a high-poverty, low Socio-Economic status community. Over 90% of my students are both of minority populations and are significantly deprived of financial stability. My K-8 school has a high mobility rate and in the past has been an under-performing school academically, as well. I am new to this school this year and really trying to shake things up! I want to motivate my students and close some of their HUGE learning gaps! Because I teach an ELD class, all of my 26 students are not proficient in speaking, reading or writing English, so my obstacles are many. However, I love my job,my students and my placement. I just need the help of donors to make a difference in the lives of these 3rd grade kids!

As a result of the many challenges my students face, (lack of parental support due to language differences, lack of funding to provide school necessities, lack of quality education due to staff turnover, etc.) my students have really struggled to grasp the simple concepts that make learners successful in the classroom. Many of my third graders can not write a complete sentence with conventions in correct form. Some of my third graders don't even spell their names properly on a regular basis! My children need significant review on sentence structure, parts of speech, conventions, phonics and spelling. I DO have texts available to teach my students in these subject areas but the content is so dry (and often above their heads) that the books are just not working. I would like to take a more hands on approach to these problems and provide for my students a more authentic learning experience.

Now that I have focused in on a few academic areas that I would like to work with my students on, and I have shared with you what's NOT working, allow me to share with you what I think just might. I would like to implement a form of Writer's Workshop and Author's Corner with my students where each student creates their own story or piece of writing on a weekly basis. Some weeks there would be structure to their writing in order to review Genre (i.e.-"This week we will write a mystery book") and other weeks students would get to choose their writing focus. With each passing week, students would write a web or some other form of brainstorming graphic, a rough draft, and a final draft. During the rough draft, students would be required to meet with me as well as a peer to review their story and receive constructive feedback / compliments. Using a preconstructed rubric, students would have a clear set of expectations as to what their story should contain and how it will subsequently be graded. During the final draft, or publishing phase, I would like to use the Document Camera to "broadcast" finish projects to the whole class.

In addition to allowing students to "broadcast" their finished projects to their peers, donors would give me the power to have teachable moments collide with student creativity. The camera could be used to review editing techniques or rubric expectations. The possibilities are ENDLESS! Donors who contribute to this project will be making learning attainable to a group who have been academically challenged for a long, long while. I know that my students would be excited about the presence of this piece of technology in our classroom and they would be excited to share their own growth with myself and their peers in such an enlivening way! It sure beats the heck out of the ole' text books! Please help me make learning fun for a group of students who is beginning to lose hope!
