Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner-city public elementary school. Our school serves a high poverty community where 99.5% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. My students face tremendous obstacles as they learn to read, such as learning English, violence at home, poverty and family drug addictions. I teach the English Language Learner class therefore, English is a second language for all of my students. It is difficult to be six years old, learning two languages and attempting to become literate; the difficulty is compounded when the student is engulfed in poverty.

My students have few books to choose from in our classroom library. Most of the books are either too hard or too easy for my learners to read and comprehend. Studies have shown that reading books that are on the right level is the best way to become a fluent reader; my students are eager to read but lack the resources to assist in reaching their goals. If the children have more books that are available to them, they will be more excited to read and will learn at a faster pace.

The leveled library that I am requesting provides multiple books on a variety of levels ranging from B-J. This will allow for all learners to find a book that best suits their fluency level; it's not too challenging or too easy and the book engages the reader. I am also requesting bins to house the books, making sure the books stay organized and accessible.

Your donation will help quench underprivileged students' thirst for knowledge and the English language. You will ensure that these children will have ample opportunity to thrive and become fluent readers.
