Essential Encyclopedias

My students need one set of illustrated science encyclopedias.

My students are an incredible group of learners. I teach fifth grade in an urban public charter school in Colorado. While I am responsible for many areas of the curriculum, a main focus of mine is science. Our school embraces diversity and the uniqueness that each student brings to the classroom. We have students from over 50 countries. All of our students bring many creative ideas and thoughts to classroom work. It is inspiring to teach such a dynamic population of learners.

Science is at the forefront of our education system. As a country, we are losing ground in the areas of science and technology. My school is not equipped with the technology or the resources needed to instill scientific thinking and inquiry in my elementary students. I am trying to change that in my classroom. I am finding ways to make science more visible to my students. I want them to see that science is all around them and that are different ways to be scientists. I need tangible resources for my students in order to spark a curiosity in any one of the scientific disciplines.

My classroom needs a set of illustrated science encyclopedias. This resource will allow multiple students to look at, read, and explore everything that science has to offer. The illustrations will help guide my struggling readers as well as bring to life information that students have only read about, but never experienced. These books will provide countless hours of reading and research. Students will be able to look up pertinent information related to areas of interest. The encyclopedias will be an extra research tool for students unable to access the Internet or get to the library on their own. I want my students to be able to access science in a variety of ways. This will provide an easy access point to all different science topics, including ones not addressed in our curriculum.

You will make science learning come alive in a fifth grade classroom. You will be able to ignite scientific inquiry and thinking. The difference you can make is invaluable. We, the students and I, are truly appreciative of all of the resources offered by donors in and out of the education world. It is important that we work together to ensure that the students are confident in the skills they possess and that they are prepared for the ever changing world we live in.
