Aspiring Readers: Lord of the Flies

My students need 75 copies of "The Lord of the Flies".

My students are hungry to go to college. Everyday, they ask me to help them with applications and ACT Study packets, but their chances are severely limited because they have been under-resourced and under-appreciated their whole lives. Now, they are juniors and seniors in high school, and their college prospects are slim. What is so admirable about my students is that they are well aware that they are behind, but they are incredibly eager to catch up. They are in a Title I High School (high need) in Memphis, TN.

The most pertinent obstacle to their failure in high school, on tests, and in college, is that they lack reading skills and experience. We are severely under-resourced, and we do not have enough materials to give each of them a take-home book during the lesson. Senior level English is British Literature, and Lord of the Flies is an essential component to that collection of books. Without having read Lord of the Flies, they will start college at a disadvantage, should they choose to go.

What we need most of all is simply enough copies of these books for each student to check one out. If we are able to get these copies, students will be able to read one of the most essential pieces of British Literature, and therefore would not be as far behind as others in the future. Also, we can use this book to discover larger literary elements, such as symbolism and more.

By donating towards these books, you will be giving needy students an edge that they otherwise would never have had. It is so imperative to close the achievement gap, but it is impossible to do so without the resources that other children have. It would be so appreciated by myself and my students alike, mainly because it gives them an opportunity that is taken for granted by so many others.
