Urban Indoor Gardens

My students need a set of plant carts, growth kits, greenhouse supplies and related resources.

I work in an amazing school with extremely passionate teachers, in a very poor urban area. Our school has decided that to reach our students more effectively we need to focus on the subjects that we are passionate about and good at, so that our passion can be contagious to our students. Therefore, at each grade level the students have two teachers: one that teaches them math and science for half the day and one that teaches them literacy for the other half. I teach the math and science portion of the curriculum.

For the past two years I have wanted to grow an edible garden with my students as a part of the second grade life science plant curriculum. Unfortunately, because our school is in the heart of the inner city, and because there are not secure outdoor areas for such a garden, all attempts to grow plants outside have been hindered by vandalism. We have thus been forced to keep our plants inside on our limited counter-space with our limited direct sun light. Despite the obstacles, my students have shown continued excitement in watching their plants grow, and even enjoy eating some of the sprouts. When I send the plants home with them I encourage them to plant them in their own pots, yards or gardens at home so they may become the edible delight we learned about. Though, I know it is unlikely they will be able to do this, given that they do not have the necessary resources at home. Therefore our discussion of plants, plant growth, and how important plants are to our own sustainability is mostly theoretical and not put into a real-world context.

I have decided that to give my students the full experience of growing their own edible gardens we need to do it in the classroom. With plant lights we will be able to grow herbs, and greens, and other small edible plants. They will be able to watch the full plant cycle from seed to seed, will be able to fully experience the role that plants play in our lives, and will begin learning some of the skills in growing their own food.

With your help my students will be able to watch the extraordinary process of life that sustains us. They will learn how to take an active role in the creation of their own sustenance and learn the value of the plants that grow all around us.
