Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Creativity has been cut! I am a high school art teacher in a high-need urban community.

For the past ten years, an after-school art club has been run for students. The art club is open to all students, regardless of skill. It presents an opportunity for students who can not fit art into their busy class schedules a chance to gain skills and release creativity. As the art teacher, I was provided with a $500 yearly stipend to run the club. I put the money toward purchasing supplies. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the stipend has been eliminated and there is a real lack of materials within the school. To continue the club (which has 20 dedicated members), supplies are desperately needed.

This year, I will need quality acrylic paint and canvas. I would like my students to complete a painting they can be proud of. The process will begin by taking trips to local landmarks and making sketches. The sketches will be turned into a final drawing or "plan" for the painting. Finally, they will get to paint. Once the paintings of these local landmarks are complete, they can be displayed at both the school and at city hall for community functions. My students will get to make art outside of school (weather permitting), which should be exciting. They will be creating art that represents their community and is for their community. It is a chance to be part of something, all while gaining skill and expressing creativity.

Your generosity will make it possible for my students to experience a high school art club. Because of you, students will gain artistic skill, express creativity, and get to be part of an extra-curricula activity and community.
