Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Trust Counselor at an inner city middle school in south Florida where I serve students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th. We currently have 89% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Our zip code is number one in the nation for HIV/AIDS cases. My daily duties include individual, group and family counseling. My efforts are prevention driven in the areas of drugs, violence and HIV/AIDS. I am also the club sponsor for two clubs: DFYIT (Drug Free Youth In Town) and HEART (Helping Educating And Reaching Teens). Both clubs focus on community service and educating their peers. Prevention Through Creative Expression is our motto for the HEART Club. We put together productions using our students talents like poetry, rap, and skits. All of our productions focus on the same prevention titles I focus on.

Unfortunately, every single year as I prepare to enjoy my time off I also have to prepare myself for the reality that I will lose a student to drugs or violence. In the past four years I have lost an average of 3-4 students to a violent death or the jail system yearly. My goal is to reach as many students as possible. This was why the HEART club was created. My peer educators have done an amazing job this year. Our final production for the year focused on HIV/AIDS. The performers were outstanding, the audience was perfect, but once I saw the pictures of the production it was obvious we need some updated equipment. We currently have one camera that does not take good pictures even with the flash on.

Therefore we are asking for your help in acquiring an updated picture camera. This equipment will benefit not only our students but also our school. Capturing these moments will also help us share and spread the word of the accomplishments my students are attaining.

So this is what it boils down to. I have an excellent set of students that worked over the summer vacation on their skits, poetry and raps. I have another amazing set of students which are back at school looking forward to our very entertaining yet educational and inspirational performances. Along with an outstanding group of staff members who support every production. There is only one thing missing.... a picture camera which will capture my students words, poetry and raps in order to share their accomplishments.
