Cultivating Compassionate Citizens

My students need books and hands-on materials to explore and understand the functions of their community.

I teach an enthusiastic bunch of three-year-olds in a low-income community in the District of Columbia. Though funding can stand in the way of acquiring adequate materials to meet the needs of these curious kids, we are not going to let that stand in the way of our learning!

Acquiring literacy and math materials in this high-needs community can be difficult, so needless to say social studies is often left out of our curriculum. I believe that the foundation of a strong community begins with its inhabitants. In order to cultivate caring, compassionate citizens, our students must learn from an early age that they are part of a community and that their community can only thrive with their help.

The materials I have requested will help my 3 year-olds understand the various roles in our community and why they are important. The community helpers unit will give them a preliminary understanding of what different people do in our community. The transportation unit will help them understand how our community's infrastructure allows us to both explore our community and travel to others.

Together, we can change the lives of 20 kids in our nation's capital. Your donation will bring them leaps and bounds closer to the educational resources that every child needs and deserves, but some are not given because of the situation they were born into. Please, help bring equality to the children of the District of Columbia!
