Readers Need Books, Musicians Need Instruments

My students need a glockenspiel and 5 sets of mallets to facilitate music reading, improvising, and performance.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary music teacher in Texas. I teach in an inner city school with about 500 students and I see all of them from Kindergarten through 5th grade. The instrument of this project would last about 10 years and see over 1,200 different students for many years each.

The most natural way to learn music is much like the way we learn language. Both should begin with mimicking. Then, accurately producing short patterns is like learning our first words. Then come musical phrases, like sentences. Eventually, we are speaking in paragraphs and complete ideas. In music, this is like doing a whole song and improvising ideas. All of this music learning is best done with an instrument in front of each student. Unfortunately, we don't have enough for every student in the classroom. Could you imagine students sharing a pencil during a writing assignment? Sharing an instrument is just as time-wasting and frustrating for the students as sharing a pencil in writing. Sadly, this is exactly what we are doing right now.

Students learn best with manipulatives. They are in every child-centered classroom. Music is no different. Supporting this project would put an awesome tool in the hands of over 400 children every year for years to come. We are actually talking in thousands of hours of instruction you could provide!

Have you ever walked into an elementary music room and seen lots of xylophones and glockenspiels? EVERYONE loves them, and they are a great tool. They draw people of all ages in. The students are more attentive and on task when we are playing them. You can help give this wonderful opportunity to these children. Supporting this project should bring a lot of joy and satisfaction knowing hundreds of smiles you will put on so many beautiful children's faces.
