Hands on Literacy for Full-Day Kindergarten Students

My full-day kindergarten students need learning games and hands-on activities to become proficient at beginning literacy skills such as letter recognition, letter-sound relationships, phonemic awareness, and alphabetic principles.

Literacy is the main focus of my full-day kindergarten class. Students need to master basic literacy skills to become successful readers. Because the majority of the students in my class come to school with little or no preschool experiences, they need many opportunities to explore early literacy. Using a variety of hands-on learning games and activities helps motivate these young students to master early literacy skills.

My school is about 1/3 non-English speaking and over 50% of the student body qualifies for free lunch. In full-day kindergarten, the children participate in modeled, guided, and independent reading every day. Daily writing activities are also an important part of the curriculum. My students need motivating games and activities to practice and master literacy skills.

I utilize literacy stations in my classroom. The games and hands-on learning activities that I am requesting will be used with students during guided reading and literacy work stations. I plan to use these games throughout the school year and would share them with the 3 other teachers on my kindergarten team.

You can help these full-day kindergarten students learn and have a positive school experience by funding this proposal. My students need hands-on learning games and activities to practice and master early literacy skills. The games and activities that I am requesting will enrich the learning for the students in my class.
