Projecting the Future

My students need 1 multimedia projector with storage cart.

Imagine twenty-nine students gathered around one laptop computer TRYING to view a photograph of a bald eagle during social studies class. How about trying to show an entire class a video about the water cycle on one small computer screen. These are just a few of the many challenges that I experience in my fourth grade class. Teaching fourth grade in an extremely diverse and multicultural school is a gift. Even though we are an extremely high need school, where most of the student population qualifies for free lunch, last year we were given an "A" rating on our school report card after our school was evaluated by the NYC quality review team. We have a very high and rising ESL population and still 85-95% of our students test on or above grade level on all New York State assessments. With budget cuts in New York City, teachers were only given $150 for classroom supplies for the entire year. A couple of storybooks, plus some consumable materials such as chart paper and markers-and then ALL MY MONEY WAS SPENT! As a New York City public school teacher I am not given the money nor the resources to teach to my full capacity. I want to give my students the ultimate, enjoyable, and memorable learning experience. I want to be able to share my creativity with each and every student and make it visible to the entire class. A multimedia projector solves many problems in my classroom and will make many things possible. I want to be able to show my students, especially those who may be new to America and never saw a snowflake, a video of snow falling. I want my students to be able to see a video of the Beatles and hear their songs after a biography reading unit. I would love for the students to be able to show off the PowerPoint presentations they put so much time and effort in. And the list of things I could do with a multimedia projector goes on and on....... I am also requesting a projector cart. With twenty-nine students in an extremely small classroom, space is limited and valuable. The multimedia chart will not only save space for storing the multimedia projector, but will also be convenient when using the projector. A multimedia projector can bring so many things and experiences alive right in our own classroom. With the Internet and today's technology there are so many opportunities for the students to be able to learn and so much for them to see. Many of my students do not own computers at home and have very little access to the Internet. Please help make it possible for me to "project the future" in my classroom with a multimedia projector and really bring learning to life!
