My students love a good story, but they all can't read one independently. I teach 5th grade in an urban school with many English language learners. Most have parents who cannot help them read in English. Every year I have students who want to read chapter books, but they find it difficult to do so alone and soon give up. That's where I come in, I can help them in class, but I have up to 33 students and I can't meet individually with each student everyday. What to do? We can all read the same book together!

Great idea, but first I need many copies of the same book. That's where you can help. I already have small sets of many books (2-6 copies), but I don't have any class sets (34 copies).

"Maniac Magee," by Jerry Pinelli is the perfect book to read with my class. It is a great combination of reality and fantasy. It is really a kind of folktale, but in this tale a boy they call "Maniac" helps his town confront racism. It's a wonderful way to introduce this tough topic to the class. And reading the book together gives ALL of my students the chance to experience the joys of reading a classic piece of literature--with a little help from me.

My students love to read, and they are always asking me for suggestions. You can help my entire class enjoy this awesome book as we read it together in the safe, helpful, and productive atmosphere of our classroom.
