Showing We Know with Legos

My students need Lego sets to creatively express their understanding of all subjects, and Kleenex to keep their noses clean.

"You have 30 minutes to create a model of the circulatory system using Legos. Go." When I first heard of this assignment, I thought the teacher was crazy, but when I heard about the outcome, I realized he was a genius. His assignment required students to combine academic knowledge with imagination to create a unique product. If you stop and think about it, isn't that how Bill Gates and Steve Jobs got started? With Legos, even my first grade students can demonstrate understanding in every discipline, from science and social studies to math and language arts. They could build representative models of their school grounds, the 7 continents of our world, or the 8 planets (and 1 planetoid) of the solar system. For language arts, they can create worlds to stimulate storytelling and creative writing, and for math, they can sort, count, and build geometric models. Although 50% of my students are learning English as a second language, manipulatives allow all learners to express their ideas. Manipulatives also encourage working together, peer modeling, and language development. Please consider investing in our bright, enthusiastic young scholars, 43% of whom qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, with a lot of Legos. (I am also requesting Kleenex to keep their noses and new Legos clean.) Thank you for reading this proposal, and if funded, I invite you to give the first assignment and I'll photograph the results for you to enjoy.
