The Task at Hand: Learning to Read!!!!

My students need a Using the Context Clues Learning Center Pack, a Reading First Listening Center Skills Pack, and 6 sets of fine line write and wipe markers.

I teach first grade in the lowest socio-economic community in our county. Most of our students do not attend preschool because they do not qualify for head start. But they do not feel they can afford private preschool. Twenty percent of my students have learning disabilities. I also have many students with attention problems in addition to one who has tourette's syndrome and an ESL student. Almost half my students are reading below the expected level for this time of year.

My students need multiple experiences with skills in order to retain the knowledge. Any experience that utilizes more than one of the five senses help them to learn better. It is crucial that students develop these skills in first grade because in my experience, students who do not learn to read in first grade struggle with reading the rest of their life. They love using technology such as CD and DVD players and computers to practice skills.

In order to meet the varied needs of the students in my classroom, I have been creating literacy tasks that give them independent practice with skills in a hands-on modality. I currently only have books on Cd for my listening center. If I had the Reading First and Context Clue (reusable skill sheets with a listening CD) skill packs and markers, my students could use the Cd players to practice crucial reading skills such as phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension in a fun tactile way. These materials are reusable so they can be used again each year with my future students.
