"Your library is your paradise," Erasmus said, and this was indeed my experience. Do you remember your school library? My kindergarten and first grade students would be overjoyed at experiencing the wonder and joy in having access to books, great books.

We are a new all girl charter school filled to the brim with vivacious, eager students.

Although small in size, we have battled huge obstacles to remain open. None of the obstacles addressed had anything to do with education. It is now time to shower our students with divine literature!

My Project

The current meager library we inherited is nothing close to what our students need to be exposed to. The books are decades old. We love books and intend on building on what few we have with some newer Children's literature, that impart a cultural relevance and diverse resources needed. Books that celebrate African Americans, Women, Latino and Asian culture. Books that delight. The first phase of the library rebuild is focused mainly on our kindergarten and first grade classes-so that they may hear fairy and folk tales from many cultures while studying favorite authors and illustrators. The libraries focus for this age group will be exposing the children to Caldecott Award recipients and then incorporating listening and viewing skills. Every week these children will be exposed to the wonders of literature and have an opportunity to discuss and celebrate the stories together.
