Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is a combined kindergarten and first grade class of special education students in an urban school district. Our school district has a very high poverty rate and has suffered budget cuts that seriously impact our ability to purchase materials. The majority of students in our school are on free or reduced lunch and come from homes in which educational resources are limited.

My students are strong learners, but the impact of autism on some of them hinders their ability to maintain concentration long enough to learn effectively. These students learn best with both sensory and "mind" input. I have had the ability to experiment with an exercise ball used as a chair in my classroom to give a student the sensory input needed while doing academic activities. The problem is that the ball rolls and it is difficult for the student to remain at the table with out "rolling away". This also poses a chance that the child will get hurt when the ball rolls too far under the work surface.

I have found a wonderful product that would benefit all the students in my classroom...therapy balls with legs!!! This would solve the problem of the ball rolling away while the student is working, thus giving them the needed input but alleviating the possibility of a child getting hurt falling off the ball.

Your donation will ensure that my students have every opportunity to learn basic skills in the most effective manner for each of them. The chance to gain sensory input while learning is inherent for my students. Each of us learns in a different way, and with a different voice. Your help will provide my students the opportunity to meet their full potential.
