There are a few missing links in my LINKS classroom. I teach in a LINKS-LIFESKILLS classroom for children in second and third grade on the Autism Spectrum. Currently, all of my students are non-verbal and use pictures or sign language to communicate.

Learning to read is a challenge for many students, but for mine as well. They are non-verbal, and for them, the ability to demonstrate their ability is the real problem. They have short attention spans, and need to have a hands on experience in order to learn basic skills. Anything that I can provide them with, in order to show me what they know is great.

The TAG system by Leapster is a learning tool in which the student will "read" the books with the talking pen. The students will pass over the words with the pen, and hear the words as they read the story. All of the books that I have chosen are of high interest to my students. I will be able to have reading groups and keep their attention for the duration of the story. We will also be able to practice turn taking, and sharing by passing the pen around the circle. These may seem like basic skills, but for students with developmental delays, they are what we are constantly working on.
