Captivated Audience: The Technology-Based Classroom

My students need a digital camera to document data for class projects in Math, Science, and Social Studies and a multimedia station to aid in presenting data and class projects to their peers.

I want to reach the PlayStation Generation! I teach Math, Science, and Social Studies to fourth graders in a low-income rural school district. I have students who are gifted and students who are barely passing. I have students who are low-income and students who are middle class. Each child comes from a unique family background with their own life experiences.

The one thing all of my students have in common is that this generation of students have been inundated by high-definition graphics in everything from their games to their TVs and cellphones. Today's teachers must provide classroom technology that will hold their attention and involve the students in meaningful learning experiences.

I am trying to build a technology-centered classroom. I have started by acquiring the use of an LCD projector to involve students in their own learning. How is this done? By providing the students with authentic learning experiences such as: Science projects that culminate in a video presentation to their classmates allows them to share what they've learned. They become teachers of that knowledge!

By donating to this project, you will be helping my students have a hands-on, personal approach to learning. It is my hope that this will be a springboard to greater student interest and achievement, not only in fourth grade, but throughout their school careers! Thank you!
