Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a first-year first grade teacher in North Carolina. I teach at a low income school. Many of our students come from disadvantaged homes, and we are very culturally diverse. I am in desperate need of some basic supplies to create a writing/art center for my students to use independently. At the beginning of the year, I asked for parents to donate supplies for the class. Unfortunately, I did not get many supplies due to the fact that many families in our school are financially strapped. In this proposal, I am asking for jumbo crayons, large beginner pencils, large glue sticks, construction paper, and ink pads to enhance the creative minds of my students. To start with, most first graders like to write with large pencils. It is easier for their hands to grip the larger pencil. I am asking for three sets of these, so that they will last for quite a while. I am also asking for a larger size box of crayons that will allow my students to use vivid colors to illustrate their stories. The few parents that donated, only provided our class with small 8-pack crayons and my students have managed to go through these within the first few months of school. In addition to crayons and pencils, I would like to ask for construction paper and large glue sticks in order for my students to illustrate and expand on their stories. For many of my students, the only opportunity they have to utilize these materials is at school. Finally, I am asking for ink pads because we are required to date our students writing to keep in their individual portfolios and the ink pads would assist me in stamping the date. I hope that with some of these basic supplies for my first graders, we can have a remainder of the year, nourishing the inner writers of all of my students. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
