Let's Argue; Artistotle Did!

My students need 25 copies of "The Informed Argument" by Robert Keith Miller for their Advanced Placement Language and Composition class.

Ms. M. Warren East High School
Bowling Green, KY Grades 9-12

These college-bound students want to learn the art of argumentation form the masters, i.e. Aristotle, Rogers, and Toulmin. My Advanced Placement Language and Composition students are dedicated to preparing themselves for the next level of their education. By learning the fine art of argumentation, they will be ready to tackle the rigors of a college curriculum; they will be ready to take on the philosophy, literature and history classes because they will arrive with the knowledge of how to formulate a well-crafted essay that argues their position. They will be ready to dig deep into the art of critical reading and thinking after digesting the content of "The Informed Argument."

I want these young students to shine. I want them to succeed in an academic world because they arrived prepared to read, write and think critically, logically and at a mature level. Great students make great citizens and great thinkers make every greater ones.

The textbook, "The Informed Argument" provides a well-organized introduction to the art of argumentation. Each of the three classical models of argument are presented with thoughtful exercises for practicing the strong points of each; thereby, training students to read, process, think, then write their argument. They will learn to interpret visual text as well as written, to take a position and to argue their case.

Teaching our young students to read and to think critically about the world around them, about the literature of yesterday and today and feel confident to organize their thoughts and expressions is an essential part of education. Thinking about thinking and formulating a skillful argument demonstrates a mature mind. This class is designed to move students to this level and your support of this proposal will empower them with the resource they need. This text will provide the readings, the models of argumentation and the exercises to train them to succeed in this meaningful process. I ask for your support on behalf of my students. If you will purchase these text for my students I will teach them to argue. Aristotle did.
