My students need 5 graphing calculators so that EVERY student in my Algebra I and Algebra II class has access to a calculator.

My classroom is a hands-on, mathematics classroom in which I hope to prepare students for further study beyond high school with the use of technology. We use technology, namely a Promethean Board and graphing calculators to enhance our learning. It allows us to explore hands-on experiences and dive in to discover where mathematics is used in our daily lives.

Students at my school come from a very low socioeconomic status. More than 80% of them are on free and reduced lunch. They need technology in their lives so that they may have the same opportunities as other students around them. They want to learn and love to do hands-on investigations, especially when it involves technology.

Currently, I do not have enough calculators for every student in my class. Students are forced to share or go without for the day. An additional 5 graphing calculators will provide me with enough calculators to place one in the hands of each child.

Your help with this project will ensure that my students have the opportunity to be engaged with technology that is current to our society. You will make it possible for my students to conduct research and work on real world applications. Math continues to be a subject that many of our students struggle with, especially those that are not native speakers. This will be another way in which we can help those underachieving students make important connections.
