I teach in a low-income urban school where my 9th grade algebra students have limited access to technology that makes math come alive.

My students often become disengaged and wonder why they are learning algebra in the first place. They see little connection to the "real world" and quickly become bored with textbooks, note taking, and worksheets.

“I’m bored!” and “When will I need to use this in the real world?” are two complaints heard frequently in math classes in my school. To help my students become engaged in math, my class needs a TI-Nspire Teacher Kit. This kit will give my learners the opportunity to make the important connection between algebra and their daily lives. Investigating a dog’s age in human years, hot air balloons, and skiing slopes are just some of the new ways we will learn algebra with the TI-Nspire calculators. Along with sparking interest in math content, this new technology is quickly becoming an aid for students during testing. It is difficult, however, for students attending a low-income urban school to purchase their own TI-Nspire calculator. By having TI-Nspire calculators in the classroom, I hope to better prepare my students for their high-stakes state tests, college entrance exams, and college. All students should have the same advantages for these tests, which include confidence in using the permitted technology. Ultimately, I hope for this technology to excite my students and be a tool to help them achieve their dreams in college and beyond.
