Building Literacy with Aesop's Fables

My students need 100 copies of "Aesop's Fables".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a large, inner-city high school in a small learning community that focuses on culture and language. Our students fall all over the spectrum in terms of reading, from voracious readers who check out stacks of books from the library each week, to struggling readers who test at the low-elementary school levels.

One of our chief struggles is to build literacy and engage all of our students with reading. Simply asking the students to read in their English classes isn't enough; we must create opportunities for reading and discussion throughout the day. We have decided as a community that students in each grade will read the same book in homeroom, to foster dialogue, build community, and increase the amount of reading students do on a daily basis.

I am requesting 100 copies of a collected volume of Aesop's fables, enough for all of our 10th grade students. The stories are small enough to manage during homeroom, but interesting enough to provoke discussion and provide a springboard to investigating the myths, legends, and fables of cultures across the world. In addition, these fables are accessible to our struggling readers, while being thought-provoking enough to engage our more advanced readers as well.

Your help will make it possible for our students to build their literacy as well as their moral judgment. In addition, it will allow all of our teachers to become involved in our students' literacy, whether they regularly teach English, algebra, or even PE. We know that the more experiences our students have with reading, the more likely they are to become lifelong learners and to continue to read long after they have left our classrooms. Thank you for helping to create a generation of strong, engaged readers!
