Since most of my students are visual learners, having access to educational DVD’s that can be shown to the entire class and then discussed, would greatly enhance my ability to teach my students. The quality of the graphics, animations and photography offered by these DVD’s is incredible and is specifically designed to aid in the understanding of complex biological processes. Furthermore, when students are able to see representations of biological processes in action, they are able to retain the information longer. This ability allows students to improve over-all test grades, especially the mandated Living Environment Regents needed for graduation. Improved Regents grades gives students a wider range of college choices upon graduation. The availability of information has grown by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, since our school is located in one of our nation’s poorest congressional districts, our operating budget is extremely limited. On top of this, we are facing a budget cut of 5-10% for the upcoming year. These students should not have to do without this invaluable educational tool due to financial difficulties at home and reduced school budgets. Our student population represents a diverse multicultural urban setting. At least 40% of our students are classified as Special Needs, and/or English Language Learners. The vast majority qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. They deserve the chance to learn and succeed in the field of science. Science should be fun and open young minds to a world of possibilities. For many of our students, however, science is the scariest of all disciplines. My proposal will allow me to create an inviting classroom environment where students can see the complexities of biology for themselves, and marvel at this thing called life. With your help, science can be made accessible to those who fear it most. Help me make science real for our students. Thank you for your generosity.
