Hands-On Biotechnology

Hi! We are a tenth grade biology class in an urban charter school. The two classes that I teach are the only biology options in our school, so the tenth grade year is their last chance to experience biotechnology.

Our school has limited funds for supplies, so the biology lab is not well stocked. Last year, my first year teaching, I tried to introduce biotechnology. We used a paper simulation that I had found online. The students did not really grasp the concepts and the simulation was much more confusing than the actual process!

I knew that we had to get some biotechnology equipment in the classroom this year, but I haven't had enough in the science budget for the students to experience it hands-on. If I were to get another electrophoresis chamber and another DNA kit, each lab group would get to run the experiment themselves. The experience of actually separating the DNA on their own is much more valuable than just watching me, so I really want to get this equipment to put it in their hands.

The limited funds at our school put students at a disadvantage in science when they head to college. Your donation would help my students be better prepared for post-secondary education and would put them on equal footing with students at larger institutions. Thanks for your help!
