When given the choice of: 1) A biology lecture about DNA or 2) A story of DANGER, of INTRIGUE... A story of dinosaurs taking over an island... Of scientists creating what previously seemed UN-CREATABLE... A very plausible, accurate, well written story set in the steamy jungles of a far off island. A story that shows the inner workings of a futuristic laboratory where white coated researchers reach into vats of steaming dry ice ... and into warm incubation chambers, as they prepare, culture, and eventually hatch -- CLONED DINOSAURS... Which would you choose? Speaking on behalf of my 130 students, the story Jurassic Park would be the lesson of choice. The activity I would like to bring to my classroom is simple: Enough copies of the novel Jurassic Park for each one of my students to read. In this novel scientists have cloned dinosaurs from DNA extracted from fossilized mosquitoes. Through this book and class discussions, the students would be exploring fundamental foundations in science including: the structure and function of DNA, heredity, evolution, animal behavior, cloning, scientific theory, as well as the benefits and dangers of biotechnology. As a biology teacher at Northern High School in Durham, North Carolina, I have the unique and wonderful opportunity to work with students from a very wide swath of economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. I love to show them that science is going on all around them. The beautiful moments when they rush into my classroom and tell me they showed their parents the "awesome lab we did in class" are the moments that I live for. Providing them all the opportunity to read this novel would not only greatly interest them while expanding their understanding of science, it would also provide them another much needed chance to improve and practice their reading skills. This is part one of a two part proposal. In order for all my students to have a book I need both parts. Thank you very much for considering my proposal.
