Bedichek Middle School students have a lot of opportunities to be involved in free after-school programs. In particular, the nonprofit organization, Citizen Schools at Bedichek Middle School, offers a structured program that provides students time to complete their homework, community exploration days, field trips, and a dozen apprenticeships to choose from each semester. A robotics apprenticeship is one of the twelve apprenticeships that are featured this semester. Our school would like to be able to provide each student with a small robotics kit to celebrate the skills they learn. Our after-school apprenticeships are a success because of the generosity of community members with their time and money. The ten week apprenticeships taught by community members are the cornerstone of our after-school program. About 15 middle-school students will get the opportunity to participate in the robotics apprenticeship and will get a chance to learn the mechanics of different types of robots. It would be so exciting for the kids to each have their own robot to assemble. This hands-on activity will be especially beneficial for students that are interested in the scientific field. They will be very proud if, by the end of their apprenticeship, they have assembled their very own robot. Our after-school program offers some rare opportunities for middle-schoolers to participate in their communities and begin setting goals for their own futures. The purpose of the apprenticeships is to expose the students to many of the interesting career possibilities that are available in Austin. The robotics kits will be a great reward for hard-working students that want to be a success and are ready, even at the middle school level, to begin seriously considering how their explorations today can affect their futures.
