Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I teach students from many diverse backgrounds. I want to give my students a year that they will never forget, full of special activities, lessons, and excitement. One of the activities that I want to incorporate into my school year, to help make it unforgettable, is a trip to Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. The trip would serve as a reward for my underprivileged children's hard work and dedication to their studies. The show is beautiful and mystifying, but best of all it teaches its audience many lessons. It focuses on the importance of reading, family, and love. The musical teaches the importance of sacrifice. These are all valuable lessons that my students can learn. The first grade social studies curriculum in NYC is built around communities. Many of my students are unaware of how large an area their community spans. They believe they live in Marcy (The Marcy Projects). I would love to expose them to a different part of their community, Times Square and the Broadway theatre in Manhattan. The trip will show them that there is life outside of the projects. The benefits of this trip are numerous. Besides escaping the projects for the day, my students will have the opportunity to learn many valuable lessons. I want to plan the trip for a Sunday matinee so that my student's parents can share in the trip. Parents and teachers must work together for students to have a successful school year. What better way to celebrate this voyage of educating students than a parent/student trip to the Big Apple? Please help me send students, and my partners, their parents, on a magical trip to Broadway.
