Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The students at Guadalupe Elementary School need to get out of the city! The purpose of Audubon Canyon Ranch's Elementary School Environmental Education Program is to provide children with opportunities to increase their awareness of nature's diversity and become familiar with regional ecological concerns. This wonderful trip allows the students to reinforce the concepts I teach in class. The students get to develop a love of nature, a concern for our fragile environment, and to share their knowledge and appreciation with others. They will receive a first-hand experience in a natural setting and be provided opportunities that reinforce basic ecological concepts. The students get to learn hands-on about earth science and life science. This hands-on approach is a much more effective way of teaching and allows for a better understanding of the concepts. The students' preserve visit is the central experience of the program and consists of a 3 hour guided nature hike led by trained docents. The volunteer docents guide students in identifying trees, viewing nesting herons and egrets, exploring pond and stream ecology, having a hands-on experience with amphibians, learning Coastal Miwok folklore, and much more. Additionally, a team of docents prepares the students for their trip with a classroom visit. Docents provide background information about the local natural environment around their school and prepare students for what they will likely see at the preserve they are visiting. Key concepts introduced in the three-part program (class visit, curriculum, field trip) include: habitats, food webs /food chains, plant and animal adaptations (general survival and seasonal), nutrient cycles, decomposition, interdependence / symbiosis, competition, life cycles (especially bird and amphibian), succession / soil development, classification, and conservation / environmental stewardship. Many of my fifth grade students this year had a wonderful time when they went to Audubon Canyon as fourth graders. One student said, “It was the best trip I have ever went on. It is so beautiful.” The fifth graders that will come to me in the 2006/2007 school year did not get the opportunity to go on this valuable trip in their fourth grade year. I would like to provide this group with this valuable opportunity. I am asking Donorschoose.org to provide the money for the buses to Audubon Canyon Ranch from Guadalupe School and back again. San Francisco Unified School district provides free busing inside the city limits, but as soon as you want to get out of the city, it is up to the teacher or school to come up with the funding. I feel it is so important to get these city kids out of the city and into nature. Experiencing nature is the only way for a student to fall in love with it, and a love for nature is extremely important for our future.
