Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching Biology and AP Biology at Hollywood High School, which is a Title I school with 40% ESL students and 74% of students who qualify for a free lunch. With 170 students, it is sometimes difficult to provide the resources necessary to maximize student achievement. Some basic supplies would help me better support my students and invest them in the learning process.
A priority in my classroom is to get instant feedback in order to be aware of any misconceptions that my students may have about a particular concept. Small individual white boards will establish a way to receive instant feedback from all of my students at the same time. Rather than having a few isolated students to respond in discussions, white boards will allow and require that each one of my students has a "voice" in the classroom.
Post-It Easel Pads will allow an effective and efficient way for my students to present ideas, lab results, and biology concepts to each other. Presenting to each other on a frequent basis will help students master important science concepts more authentically rather than passively listening to lecture. In addition, students will be able to practice presenting in front of their peers, which is an extremely important skill to develop in high school.
In addition, using colored paper is a simple way of scaffolding students in a variety of ways. While the school provides only white copy paper, there are numerous advantages to having colored paper. Colored paper will help with student organization, with instructional clarification, and with the general presentation of material.
Lastly, our class is lacking some essential lab materials. A class-set of timers would be extremely valuable. My students would put more care into time-sensitive labs if they knew that data was collected under more controlled conditions. Furthermore, in preparation for dissections, specific dissection manuals are necessary to maximize learning during a three-week time commitment.
My students and I are extremely grateful for any support in obtaining these essential supplies for our classroom.
