Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher at Thomas P. Ryan in San Jose. Since 18 of the 20 students in my class are second language learners, I have to focus on reading and writing. However, this often leaves little time for science. I need to incorporate science into my program.
This is my plan: Use science experiments as a conduit for language arts skills.
I would like to order some science materials for my students to do during the workshop portion of our language arts block. The students will need to read the description of the science experiments from the materials. Then, they will perform the experiments and record their observations in their notebooks.
Just to give you a sense, if an experiment involves growing caterpillars into butterflies, then the students will read the instructions for this experiment from the science materials, and record daily growth of the caterpillar in their science journal.
Another example might be reading about specific animals (science photo collection) and to write a paragraph report on that animal. The Science games library will enhance their reading ? they will read about the animals in the food chain, and other animal facts. Writing can be integrated into these games as well ? the students can write reports about animals, birds and insects and the food chain.
Thus, with this plan, the students will learn about science without taking time away from reading and writing, which is their core focus. Please help me teach my students science with these needed materials. These materials will make an everlasting impression on them. Thank you.
