Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach grades K through 3 at the Carson Elementary School on Chicago's South West side. Statistically, the students at Carson, including those that I serve in the technology classroom, are 98% Hispanic, 42% have English as a second language and 96% are identified as members of Low Income families. As a result, for the vast majority of my students, having access to voice or image recording technology is rare.
It would be most beneficial for our students to have access to an Apple computer with iLife programming and use technology to improve fluency. This specialized equipment has the capacity to bring fluent reading to life through video, sounds, and pictures. Fluency is a key component of proficient reading, enabling text comprehension in the English language, especially among Spanish speaking children.
By reciting poems or self authored stories with the iLife program children will develop confidence in their pronunciation of words and sentences, while developing speed, accuracy and proper expression. Observing their own video and listening to their own voices will promote fluency by allowing them to ?catch? mistakes as they proceed. This strategy can be fun and easy to implement with the use of this multimedia technology. Most importantly, however, it can be very effective in helping children read with ease, confidence, and understanding.
Finally, but no less importantly, another critical benefit of this program will allow the children to share the progress of their accomplishments with family members at home by creating a CD to take along for homework assignments.
