Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our classroom, we celebrate differences and build on each others' ideas and creativity. We acknowledge that everyone learns differently and use that to enhance each aspect of our academic goals. We can see the ending point, but the process in between and how we get there is the exciting part.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and opportunities.
I teach at an inner city public school in New York. I work in an ICT classroom which is designed for students in both special education and general education. My students are thoughtful and engaged children who are eager to learn about the world around them and are willing to take risks in order to enhance their education.
My Project
Working in an ICT classroom, my students are surrounded by challenges every day that both excite and expand their minds. The students feed off of each others' ideas and challenge each other to push themselves further. With the large easel and mini white boards, the students can work in small groups and use the materials to demonstrate their knowledge. Each student can express and share their ideas in a smaller setting, allowing us, as teachers, to monitor progress more closely. The books we are requesting will be used for small guided reading groups and will help those that are struggling to sort out their ideas and thoughts in a smaller setting. The sorting bins will allow for each small group to value independence and take responsibility for maintaining necessary materials. All of my students will benefit from these items by allowing smaller groups to form and will help them develop the independence and confidence that can occur within smaller, team-building groups.
Our classroom and students are always looking for new and creative ideas to help make education hands-on and exciting.
Often we have found that children respond well to structures and clear expectations. More than anything, I want to allow my students to express their creativity, thoughts and ideas with supportive guidance and allow them to grow in a safe and independent manner. By using small groupings, we can allow each student's voice to be heard and nurture that small idea into a big one!
