Many of you have noticed our exciting partnership with OO.com, a Next Jump company. Through this partnership, Next Jump is supporting critical technology projects on DonorsChoose.org and inspiring the next generation of engineers. As you may have also noticed, this partnership has evolved since it first launched in November, leading to many exciting changes on www.OO.com/SA500Kids.

As a pioneering technology company, Next Jump is continuously creating, tweaking, and innovating. In the words of their Founder and CEO, Charlie Kim, “We have a culture of innovation, and the ability to experiment is key in our investments.” These investments include SA500 Kids and Shop Save Give on OO.com.

This philosophy and approach explain an upcoming change that will impact the way voting works on www.OO.com/SA500Kids. To make sure our teachers and their supporters know what to expect, we’ve published full campaign details in our Help Center, along with information about this upcoming voting change. We’ll continue to add details to that page as we learn more, so stay tuned!

We’re grateful for the passion that DonorsChoose.org teachers and the Next Jump team display to bring technology into more public school classrooms across the country.

Fast Company Magazine named DonorsChoose.org one of the 50 Most Innovative Companies in the World this year alongside companies like Apple, Google, Netflix—the first time a charity has made the list. GOOD Magazine highlighted DonorsChoose.org as one of 30 Places We Want to Work.

We are always searching for top talent to join our team, and we value referrals from those who know us best. Starting this month we’re asking DonorsChoose.org teachers to help us recruit the best and brightest to our staff, and we’ll give you a $1,000 in DonorsChoose.org gift card if your referral is successfully hired!

HOW?

  1. Teachers – Sign Up to receive email alerts on our full-time job openings throughout the year.
  2. View our current openings and share these and future job descriptions with your network. Encourage qualified candidates to apply and identify you in their cover letter.
  3. If someone you referred is successfully hired for a full-time position, we’ll give you a $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift card!

FINE PRINT:

  • Only full-time positions are eligible for the reward (not internships or temporary/part-time positions)
  • $1,000 gift card will be given for a successfully HIRE. If a teacher gets 5 people to apply for a position but none are ultimately hired, the teacher will not receive the $1,000 gift card .
  • Your referrals should indicate your name in the cover letter. In addition, we’ll be sure to ask each applicant we speak with how they learned about the position. Please do not contact our Customer Service team to inquire about the status of candidates you referred as we’re unable to provide individual updates. If your referral is hired, rest assured that we’ll happily contact you regarding your $1,000 gift card!

“During my internship at DonorsChoose.org, I experienced the rare combination of learning practical new skills, conducting meaningful work, and having a blast!” – Clare, Harvard University

The Program

The mission of our internship program is to provide college students with exposure to and work experience in the nonprofit sector.  Because DonorsChoose.org is still a relatively new organization, interns have the unique opportunity to contribute to its growth and scalability.

Check out some blog posts where interns describe their experiences in their own words:

Hi, we’re the summer interns!

On August 2-3, 2011, educators, students, parents, and social media mavens gathered together for the first annual #140edu Conference: Exploring the State of Education NOW. Panelists discussed a variety of hot topics related to integrating technology and social media into school curriculum, how to improve online safety for kids, and resources for continued learning. Here are some of the highlights from the conference:

Book Blog Buzz
Reading blogs are a hit at Verona Schools in New Jersey. Students are creating excitement for reading by posting reviews of current ‘buzz books’ they enjoy including titles like The Hunger Games, Stargirl, and The Misfits. Patrick Higgins, Supervisor of Humanities for the Verona Schools shared the story of how students and teachers created the HBWReads blog to help eliminate word poverty.

Edcamp: Teacher Tech Professional Development
Want to learn how iPads are used in elementary classrooms? Or have you ever wanted to integrate smart phones into high school lesson plans (since students have them anyway)? Edcamp hosts professional development for teachers, as well as access to wiki materials and twitter chats for ongoing learning and feedback.

KidzVuz
Tweens share KidzVuz video reviews of books, games, toys etc. they enjoy. A fun, safe kid-approved website founded by Social Media Strategist and proud parent Rebecca Levey.

Storytelling Motivates Middle School Girls to Learn Computer Programming
Lynn Langit, Co-Founder of Teaching Kids Programming, shares her passion for teaching 1000+ students in 18 months via online curriculum. Lynn’s students had such fun programming they were even willing to give up their lunch break to code additional projects! Sounds like a bright future ahead for hacking education.

Teacherpreneurs
Our thanks to Mike Karnjanaprakorn, CEO of Skillshare, for highlighting teacher activists and education entrepreneurs who create positive change for classrooms.

PYPM: Philly Youth Poetry Movement
Executive Director Gregory Corbin shares the power of poetry with his students to promote self expression and creative learning. Talented young writers, performers, and advocates emerge from the PYPM movement which has helped spark social change and bring learning to life across all subjects.

We’re excited to announce the launch of an inspiring initiative with AT&T. Today, in honor of teachers everywhere and to celebrate our favorite week, AT&T is launching an offer to bring hundreds of public school projects “Almost Home.”

What is AT&T Funding? For more than 25 years, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have been committed to strengthening communities through advancing education. In 2008, the company launched AT&T Aspire , specifically focused on confronting the high school dropout crisis to help ensure students graduate prepared for the future challenges of continuing education and the workforce. AT&T’s support of DonorsChoose.org will target projects focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and college and career preparation.

How does it work? Starting May 2nd, AT&T will match funding for eligible projects at DonorsChoose.org up to $100,000. All eligible projects need less than $100 to make them a reality for a teacher and his/her classroom. You can pick a project to support in honor of a teacher that made an impact in your life.

As you have no doubt heard by now, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon had a hilarious showdown all in the name of supporting teachers and students. It all started with Stephen Colbert auctioning off his self-portrait for $26,000, which will bring art projects to life. Then, Jimmy Fallon got in on the fun, raising another $26,000 for public school projects on DonorsChoose.org. To learn more, check out this blog post.

Now, longtime DonorsChoose.org supporter Craig Newmark, of Craigslist, is getting in on the action by kicking in his own $26,000 for school projects supporting students of military parents. In his own words, “I figure that a lot of military families send their kids to schools that could really use a  hand, not only for classroom projects, but even basic supplies. DonorsChoose.org helps out, where a teacher can list projects and the funding they need to proceed, and provides serious accountability per project … The folks at DonorsChoose.org have located a bunch of schools that serve large numbers of the kids of military families, and about fifty thousand dollars worth of projects.”

Mr. Newmark will be providing 50% matching funding for these classroom projects and you can help bring them to life – just click here to see the projects being supported and  to get involved.

On behalf of all of the teachers and students who will benefit, thanks so much to Craig Newmark for following in the generous footsteps of Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, and helping to bring projects to life!

Last week more than 150 teachers (more than half of which were new to DonorsChoose.org) joined DonorsChoose.org and Raft at Microsoft’s campus in Silicon Valley to learn more about our organizations.

We were amazed by the amazing questions and stories we heard from teachers and the impressive array of projects that have come from that event. But don’t take our word for it, check out some of these photos and videos from the event:

DonorsChoose.org is excited to announce a fantastic new partnership with Horace Mann, an insurance and financial services company that works with teachers across the country and, much like us, was “Founded by Educators for Educators.”  Starting today, Horace Mann kicks off a national $250,000 Double Your Impact (DYI) funding opportunity focused on schools served by their agents.

To see if your school is included, please visit www.horacemann.com/teacher-lounge/donorschoose/school-availability/.  Schools have been hand-selected by Horace Mann based on their location relative to Horace Mann agents.  DonorsChoose.org and its staff do not control which schools are included in this opportunity.

Please note – to qualify for the DYI, a project’s total cost (including all fees and the optional doantion) must be $400 or less, and it must be submitted no earlier than February 1st.

In conjunction with this sizeable funding opportunity, Horace Mann is also providing its agents with gift cards that they can use in their neck of the woods to help teachers make their classroom dreams a reality.  In total, Horace Mann has committed over half a million dollars to support students and teachers in need this spring, and we’re thrilled for their tremendous support in both funding classroom projects and helping spread the word about DonorsChoose.org to teachers across the nation.

To learn more about Horace Mann and all the financial and insurance solutions they provide teachers, please visit www.horacemann.com.

Blizzards may be over in New York, but it’s just begun at the DonorsChoose.org office.

Every January, when the holiday giving season subsides and our Winter Ordering Break concludes, we send a flurry of orders to our vendors from all the projects funded in December.

Earlier this month, our Project Fulfillment Team sent over 15,000 orders to schools in just 3 days – that’s nearly 60 percent more orders than last January. This increase is thanks to the awesome donors who gave almost $4 million to projects on our site in December.

While our vendors feverishly ship boxes to schools, our five-member team is working overtime to track every item from supplier to classroom. With this flurry of activity, there’s a chance some items – and our replies to your questions – might be a bit slower than usual. Our apologies in advance for any delays! We promise to work with our vendors to get every last order processed as soon as we can.

Now back to plowing through! :)

Last Friday, Bing and DonorsChoose.org launched a new way to search for projects! This amazing application shows live projects on an interactive Bing map. You can zero in on projects seeking help in your neighborhood or take a step back and see how great the need is across your state.  Either way, this map will help you find projects with the same great search features you’re used to using at DonorsChoose.org.

This app is a great way to find projects you might be interested in supporting, but it’s also really easy to share. Schools, school districts and donors can now put a DonorsChoose.org Bing Map on their own website to help spread the word. Want to help drive support for Cincinnati schools? Just add this to your website:

Give it a test-drive and see how easy it is to use and share!

You can learn a bit more from Matthew Quinlan, who led this project, by visiting his blog post: The DonorsChoose.org Map App.
