DonorsChoose.org is excited to announce a fantastic new partnership with Horace Mann, an insurance and financial services company that works with teachers across the country and, much like us, was “Founded by Educators for Educators.” Starting today, Horace Mann kicks off a national $250,000 Double Your Impact (DYI) funding opportunity focused on schools served by their agents.
To see if your school is included, please visit www.horacemann.com/teacher-lounge/donorschoose/school-availability/. Schools have been hand-selected by Horace Mann based on their location relative to Horace Mann agents. DonorsChoose.org and its staff do not control which schools are included in this opportunity.
Please note – to qualify for the DYI, a project’s total cost (including all fees and the optional doantion) must be $400 or less, and it must be submitted no earlier than February 1st.
In conjunction with this sizeable funding opportunity, Horace Mann is also providing its agents with gift cards that they can use in their neck of the woods to help teachers make their classroom dreams a reality. In total, Horace Mann has committed over half a million dollars to support students and teachers in need this spring, and we’re thrilled for their tremendous support in both funding classroom projects and helping spread the word about DonorsChoose.org to teachers across the nation.
To learn more about Horace Mann and all the financial and insurance solutions they provide teachers, please visit www.horacemann.com.

Our district is listed; however, the new school, Pittsboro Primary is not included in the schools. Is it possible that it could be included in the eligible schools.

We’ll get Pittsboro Primary added!

Its sad to see my school is not listed on there and Horace Mann has done Double Your Impact funding on my projects before!
Comment by Michelle Hopkins — February 1, 2011 at 12:53pm
Karen,
Yes! If your school qualifies, just submit a project (starting today) that costs $400.00 or less in TOTAL costs (including all fees, shipping charges, etc.). Once your project is screened by our team, if it qualifies you’ll see the DYI Horace Mann logo on your project page.
Thanks!

It’s sad to see that my school is not listed on here when Horace Mann funded many projects through Double Your Impact earlier in the year! Please add Central York School District!!!
Comment by Michelle Hopkins — February 1, 2011 at 12:55pm
I think the districts in my county are the only ones in Ohio unable to participate. I’m surprised with almost every district in the county having 80-90% of students living in poverty. :(
Comment by Becca — February 1, 2011 at 1:25pm
Michelle,
The schools chosen were hand-selected by Horace Mann based on the regions in which their agents work.

Some of the schools in our district are located under the Texas Department of Education (such as our feeder middle school: KIPP Academy) and yet others such as mine (KIPP Houston High School) are not. Can we be added?

Our old school name of South Granville School of Engineering and Applied Studies is listed, but our name was changed this year to South Granville School of Intergratd Technolog and Leadership. Will this be a problem?
Comment by Deborah — February 1, 2011 at 6:13pm
Hello,
When you say “total costs” does that include the optional donation to Donorschoose.org? My project comes to $399 with shipping and taxes, but $470 with the optional donation.
Thank you!
Mary
Comment by Mary — February 1, 2011 at 6:20pm
Debbie,
No, that isn’t a problem, just register as a teacher at the old school name. We’ll update the name eventually :)

Mary,
Yes, the $400 limit must include the optional donation. Your project must stay under that $400 threshold, even including the optional donation and all other fees.

Comment by Cheri Cerio — February 1, 2011 at 6:38pm
Cheri,
That decision will be up to Horace Mann since the hand-selected the schools eligible for this offer. I’d encourage you to submit a project, and if your school is added later, it will become eligible for the DYI.
Comment by Kirk — February 1, 2011 at 6:43pm
So if our schools are listed an Almost Home offer is guaranteed?
Comment by cindy — February 1, 2011 at 6:59pm
Cindy,
If your school is listed then you are ELIGIBLE for the Double Your Impact offer (it is not an Almost Home offer). The other requirements are that you submit a project no earlier than today and the TOTAL project cost be $400 or less. Please remember, Double Your Impact is only an offer for half funding. Other donors will still need to donate to match that funding before the total Horace Mann grant is spent out.
Comment by Kirk — February 1, 2011 at 7:04pm
Just wondered if you would clarify this. It says on the Horace Mann site that the proposal should be posted on dc AFTER Feb.1. Does that mean if we submitted them yesterday and they are not posted yet, Feb. 1, will they NOT be eligible? This is so confusing. Thank you in advance!
Comment by Kelly — February 1, 2011 at 7:21pm
Kelly,
If you submitted your project BEFORE today (2/1/11) it won’t qualify. This offer is only for projects that teachers submit starting today onward.
Comment by Kirk — February 1, 2011 at 7:28pm
Thanks for your reply. How can I get it taken down and then resubmitted? I really wanted to time it right and with the wording being different on the 2 sites, Horace Mann and dc, I guess I read the wrong one. Can you help me with that?
Comment by Kelly — February 1, 2011 at 7:32pm
My school district (Buckeye Elementary District in Buckeye AZ) is listed, but Inca Elementary is not listed. Is my school participating?
Comment by Michele — February 1, 2011 at 7:40pm
Kelly,
You cannot remove a project and resubmit it. You can choose to cancel a project and then create a new one, but you will lose the point you used to submit the first project, so I wouldn’t advise doing that unless you have extra points in your account to use.
Comment by Kirk — February 1, 2011 at 7:57pm
Michele,
Horace Mann will be updating the list of eligible schools monthly. If you’d like your school included, please go to http://www.horacemann.com/teacher-lounge/donorschoose.aspx and read their instructions to contact your local Horace Mann agent to get your school added.

Thanks for contacting your nearest Horace Mann agent! They’ll help to determine if your school should be eligible or not based on their territory. Other teachers – follow Robin’s great lead and go to http://www.horacemann.com/teacher-lounge/donorschoose.aspx and follow their instructions to contact your local agent if you think your school is wrongfully omitted. It is probably helpful for you to read all the other questions we’ve answered before posting a comment, too.
Thanks, and stay safe and warm if you’re being hit by this horrible blizzard!

The School Districts on the left side do not match up with the schools on the right side for Arizona. It appears that someone just copied and pasted the right side several times. It is not correct. I have worked in several school districts and they are all wrong. My currect school district is listed, but none of the schools appear on the right side. I think my agent needs some help correcting the districts and the corresponding schools.

Comment by Kirk — February 1, 2011 at 10:58pm
Kirk,
If you check the wording on the HM website, it says “not posted’ before Feb 1 – it doesn’t say “submitted”. Since that info was posted before the blog info, some of us went by the HM info. Those few hours are going to hurt several of us.

Comment by Laneah Maddox — February 6, 2011 at 9:36am
Michele and Robin,
For most schools, contacting your Horace Mann agent won’t matter since the schools included in this DYI opportunity were hand-selected by the company and only in the cases of an oversight (such as all the other schools in your district being included but not yours) will Horace Mann be adding schools to eligibility list. Although we know that all schools and teachers could benefit from this opportunity, only schools on the Horace Mann site via the link we shared qualify at this time. We hope you have great success using DonorsChoose.org and showcasing your project to thousands of other donors across the nation.
Comment by Kirk — February 6, 2011 at 5:56pm
Michele,
I cannot add schools to the DYI since only schools hand-selected by Horace Mann are included.
Laneah,
If your school is new and not in the DonorsChoose.org database, please create a teacher account and follow the steps provided to get your new school listed with us. Getting your school added to our database, however, does not make your school eligible for this offer from Horace Mann.
Graquetta,
If your project qualifies for this DYI opportunity, you should see the Horace Mann logo on your project once it is submitted, screened, and live on our site.
Comment by Kirk — February 6, 2011 at 5:58pm

If your project qualifies, once you submit it and it is screened by our team, the Horace Mann DYI logo will automatically appear on your project.
Ms. Ryan,
This funding opportunity will end once the $250,000 grant is depleted. We’re not sure how long this will take, but it should last at least a few months.
Comment by Kirk — February 8, 2011 at 10:32am
I posted a project on February 1 and it was approved – however it still does not show the Horace Mann logo (only Lincy Foundation). Can you please let me know who I would contact about having the Horace Mann fuding also help my project? My school does qualify and is on the list.
Comment by Christine — February 8, 2011 at 5:08pm
Christine,
A project can only qualify for one DYI offer at a time. Your project successfully qualified for the Lincy Foundation DYI offer, so the Horace Mann offer will not apply to your project. The great thing is that there are so many amazing funders willing to support your project!
Comment by Kirk — February 8, 2011 at 5:16pm
All the schools in Plant City are listed but our charter school. We are part of Hillsborough County area 6. Any chance some of our teachers projects that were just posted could have some help being funded. Thank you

Comment by Stephanie Wofford — February 8, 2011 at 7:54pm
Stephanie,
One of your projects is currently participating in the Horace Mann DYI and you should see the logo on it. The other project does not meet the DYI cost requirements (it needs to cost $400 or less to qualify), so it will not be eligible for the Horace Mann DYI.

Comment by Kathleen — February 9, 2011 at 4:22pm
Kathleen,
Your project doesn’t meet the other requirements of this DYI funding opportunity. Projects must be submitted no sooner than 2/1/11 and must have a total cost of $400 or less. Your project costs more than that, but feel free to submit another project that meets those qualifications and it should qualify since your school is eligible for this offer from Horace Mann.
Comment by Kirk — February 9, 2011 at 4:27pm
My district is included Bellwood, IL District 88 however my school is not listed. I called my agent and asked if I could still put a project to be hopefully funded by HM. He said just to go ahead and post it but I wanted to be sure.
Could you please add Roosevelt Middle School to the eligibility list under Bellwood, IL Dirtrict 88? I really hope I can obtain some simple classroom supplies by this great opportunity.
Comment by Esther — February 10, 2011 at 12:05am
Esther,
Right now your school is not on the list of included schools. That list was hand-selected by Horace Mann, so I cannot add your school. If they instruct me to add your school, I will, and at that time you’ll see the Horace Mann logo appear on your project.

Jennifer,
Your project has been added to the DYI. It would help if you don’t change the expiration date when submitting a project. By using the default expiration date, it will ensure that the DYI picks up your project if it’s at a qualifying school and $400 or less.
Thanks!

If a teacher has a project that is only needing around $93 left which is more than half funded, can that teacher go in and finalize everything expecting the Horace Mann funding to make up the final $93?
Comment by Candy — February 16, 2011 at 12:30am
Candy,
The way the DYI program works is that it only applies to projects that still need at least half of the funding to be donated. Since this DYI only applied to projects submitted from 2/1/11 onward, new projects that qualify should automatically pick up the DYI before anyone has the chance to donate other funds to them, thus avoiding the situation you outline. If there is a project that you think should have had Horace Mann DYI funding and it is already over half-funded, let me know what the project is (name/id) and I’ll see what I can do.

Hi Kirk, Do special requests still qualify for a DYI offer? For instance, if my special request stays under $400 would it still qualify for the HM offer and would a Special request for a HP item qualify for the HP match offer?
Thanks again for your help. Jennifer
Comment by Jennifer — February 17, 2011 at 5:25pm
Jennifer,
Yes, special requests under $400 can still qualify for the Horace Mann DYI offer. I have no idea about the HP offer, but I’d encourage you to submit it and then followup with our customer service team if it doesn’t qualify for the HP DYI after it is screened and live on the site.

Suzanne,
Thanks for letting us know. Your schools was in our database twice, and only one of the entries was added to the Horace Mann DYI. I’ve added your school now (both entries), so your project should qualify.

project listed on this link had double your impact funding removed: http://bit.ly/f0W0yP
Why? It meets all guidelines listed above. When project was completed, the matching funds were taken away.
Comment by Brian — February 22, 2011 at 7:41pm
Brian,
Not sure why that technical glitch happened, but I made sure the Horace Mann funds got applied, and the project is now fully funded.

Hi Kirk,
My project (ID 531371) just posted but I don’t see the Horace Mann DYI logo. I believe it should qualify. Can you take a look for me? Thanks!
Comment by Marna — February 23, 2011 at 10:21am
Marna,
For projects where the teacher changes the expiration date (like yours), it could take up to 3 days for it to get added to the DYI since it has to be done manually. I’ve added your project now.
Comment by Kirk — February 23, 2011 at 10:46am
My project (531570) was just posted today and my school is on the list. I believe it should qualify it is under $400. Is there a reason why it was not DYI? Thanks!
Comment by Raelynn Pfaff — February 23, 2011 at 1:05pm
Raelynn,
If you changed the expiration date on your project, it has to be manually added to the DYI, and that can take up to 3 days, but rest assured, it will get added.
Thanks!

If you changed the expiration date, it can take up to 3 days for the DYI logo to be added to your project, but rest assured that it will be added soon as long as it qualifies.

We had a representative come to my new school, Hawks Nest Intermediate, and tell us of this program. I have now submitted and been approved for a project, but I do not see the Horace Mann money added. When I look at the list of apporved schools, we are not on it. How can I get the money added to my account, and how do we get mys chool added on the list?
Comment by Kim — February 25, 2011 at 9:45am
Hi Kirk!
Sorry I didn’t run across this blog before I posted my project a couple of days ago. It is project number 532132 and meets all the qualifications for the Horace Mann match. I did however change the expiration date in hopes of receiving the supplies before the school year ends. Just wanted to give you a heads up so hopefully I can get the matching grant before funds run out! Thanks so much!

Kimy,
Thanks for letting me know, your project has been added.
Kim,
I”m checking with Horace Mann, but it’s likely your school will be included in the DYI when they update their list of qualifying schools next month (since an agent presented there).

Hi Kirk,
My project, number 532002 meets the criteria for the Horace Mann match, but it is not showing on my page . I was hoping to have the funding completed for my project before the grant money runs out. Can you check it out for me? Thanks, Gen
Comment by Gen — February 25, 2011 at 1:44pm
I wondered how long this funding opportunity will be available. Please let me know. Thanks for doing this for educators!
Comment by ann — February 26, 2011 at 10:52am
Ann,
We don’t know how long this opportunity will last since it’s contingent on citizen philanthropist donations, but I wouldn’t expect it to last past April.
Comment by Kirk — February 27, 2011 at 4:58pm
I contacted my Horace Mann rep and was disappointed when I was asked to give him ‘10 minutes’ of my time to discuss Horace Mann insurance options,ect.. How disappointing! I thought they were donating to help educators not to try and sell insurance plans to schools! Double edged sword going on here!
Comment by Susan Kopecki — February 28, 2011 at 8:35pm
I am very surprised to see that Milwaukee Public Schools were not listed for this program. Do I contact a local Horace Mann Agent to see how to get my school part of this program?
Comment by Jessica — March 1, 2011 at 11:09pm
Susan,
Meeting with a Horace Mann agent is not necessary to participate in this funding opportunity, so you can certainly politely decline. Horace Mann does provide some fantastic services to teachers which they are hoping to make educators more aware of through this generous partnership and funding opportunity.
Comment by Kirk — March 2, 2011 at 10:34am
Jessica,
The schools included in this funding opportunity were chosen by Horace Mann based on the communities in which their agents work. If your school/district isn’t included, it’s likely because Horace Mann doesn’t conduct business in your area.
Comment by Kirk — March 2, 2011 at 10:35am
Hi, Kirk,
Our city is listed and the school down the street is but not MIles El in Huntington Park. Can we be listed?
Lisa
Comment by Lisa Robles — March 3, 2011 at 12:48pm
Hi Lisa,
We don’t have any control over which schools are included since they were hand-selected by Horace Mann.
Comment by Kirk — March 3, 2011 at 12:50pm
Is the Horace Mann DYI still available? If so I just had two new projects post that qualify. Can you help me? Thanks!
Comment by Danielle Aultman — March 7, 2011 at 12:29pm
Danielle,
Thanks, your projects have been added to the DYI (it’s still available).
Comment by Kirk — March 7, 2011 at 1:08pm
How do you get the Horace Mann funding? Do we need to notify them?
Comment by lisa raymond — March 7, 2011 at 1:19pm
Lisa,
To be eligible for this DYI offer from Horace Mann, you must teach at a school designated by Horace Mann (see the blog post above for the link to learn more and see if your school is included) and your total project cost must be less than $400.
Comment by Kirk — March 7, 2011 at 1:22pm
I teach at a school designated by Horace Mann. It is sad that the project has to be less then $400 including the donation to DonorsChoose.org. My project could have been eligible other wise but because I choose to support DonorsChoose.org I went over by $42.34
Comment by Cathy — March 9, 2011 at 7:24am
Cathy,
The $400 stipulation has been a guideline for Horace Mann since the campaign launched, and that had been communicated to teachers via this blog, the Horace Mann site, and our teacher newsletter. As a teacher submitting a project, there is no option to remove the optional donation to DonorsChoose.org since that is built into the cost of the project, and it is up to the donors to choose if they want to include that in their donation or not.
But don’t worry – your project will have a great chance for funding thank to the thousands of individuals who visit DonorsChoose.org to contribute to projects like yours!
Comment by Kirk — March 9, 2011 at 10:09am
I am a Horace Mann school as per their website but my grants haven’t been touched by them- under $400. I submitted them after Feb 1. How do I get flagged for a donation from Horace Mann?
Comment by Lisa Decker — March 9, 2011 at 7:52pm
My school is designated as a Horace Mann School. I put up a project this week that is under $400- it’s $399 but that’s still under the 400. However, I do not have the 2x matching symbol from Horace Mann, nor any donation. What should I do?
Comment by Meghan — March 9, 2011 at 9:40pm
Lisa,
All of your projects currently qualify for the Horace Mann Double Your Impact offer. You can tell by the Horace Mann and DYI logo that you see on your project page near the donation box. This isn’t a guarantee of funding, but rather a DYI is an opportunity for Horace Mann to match the donations made by other individuals. If they donate half of the funding needed for your project, Horace Mann’s donation will kick in, but until that point it’s just an “offer” of funding.
This funding opportunity isn’t going to last much longer, so be sure to rally supporters to donate to your projects if you’d like to take advantage of the DYI offer. You can learn more about our DYI program at http://help.donorschoose.org/app/answers/detail/a_id/167
Comment by Kirk — March 9, 2011 at 9:45pm
Meghan,
Your project has been added to the DYI!
Comment by Kirk — March 9, 2011 at 9:48pm
What do you mean by the Horace Mann funding won’t last much longer? Can you give us an estimated number of days? I may just finish the funding myself but it would be best if I had an estimated time frame that the funding would be pulled. Our agent told us that once our project was posted and qualifies then the $$ was already allotted for that project until the expiration date of the project, was that not true?
Comment by Julie — March 10, 2011 at 2:40pm
Julie,
Your agent must have been confused, because the money is not guaranteed but merely an offer if the other half of funding is provided by other donors. That offer only lasts until the grant runs out. We don’t know when exactly that will happen (since it’s contingent on donors matching Horace Mann’s offer for each project), but it will likely be within the next 5 days.
The funding opportunity lasts until the grant expires, but it does NOT last until your project expires. The grant will expire much sooner than your project does, at which time you will lose the DYI offer, but your project will still be eligible for donations from thousands of other donors at our site.
Comment by Kirk — March 10, 2011 at 2:46pm
Thanks for the explanation! Will help with the planning!
Comment by Julie — March 10, 2011 at 5:08pm
I have had several proposals posted as of yesterday. My proposal did have the logo yesterday, but not today. Does this mean that the funding offer has expired. Will there be any more funding opprtunities in the future?
Comment by Sharla — March 11, 2011 at 12:20pm
Hi Sharla,
Yes, the Horace Mann DYI funding offer ended this morning! $250,000 was spent over less than 6 weeks. There are constantly other DYI and Almost Home funding opportunities on our site, so you may see other corporate/foundation logos on your project in the future offering a funding opportunity. Also, rest assured that your project will be visible to thousands of individual donors who visit our site and fund projects. The average project has a success rate >65%!

Angela,
I’m not sure, but this funding opportunity has concluded.
Comment by Kirk — March 11, 2011 at 1:25pm
Please bring the funding back. My project was about to be funded and now it is back to square one. I felt so strongly about the project that I was going to donate the rest of the money myself. I can’t afford the whole project, but with Horace Mann’s funding it was a real possibility. Please see projects:

Hi! I wanted to express my thanks to the Horace Mann company for providing this opportunity! I had three projects partially funded last month when the promotion was still going on, and our local Horace Mann Rep. came to our school to help explain how to maximize our chances! He also shared with us that the Double Impact Offer from Horace Mann will become available in the future as well, but the date is unknown at this time. What a great thing for a company to do!

Horace Mann wrote one of our school’s contacts, Nona Thomas. She wanted me to inquire whether our K-12 schools, Faithway Christian School and/or Faith High School, could be added to your listing and seek possible funding for several hundred dollars.
Please let me know what steps to follow, if this is possible. Both schools are located at: 1225 South Center Road, Burton, MI 48509.

My school, Navin Elementary in Marysville, Ohio, is currently served by a Horace Mann representative. It does show up on the list of schools when I search for it on your website. However, I have two project requests on DonorsChoose.org and neither one have the Horace Man Double-Your-Impact offer located on the right hand side of the project. Also- I’ve tried signing up for The Classroom Project contest on facebook and it is not accepting my project ID #s. Can you please tell me what I need to do for the DYI offer and The Classroom Project offer? Thanks so much for your help!
