You guys might have heard by now, but on Monday we were thrilled to learn that we made the list of Oprah’s Favorite Things 2010. We’re still still recovering from the excitement. Mostly because we never imagined we’d stand shoulder to shoulder with a chicken pie, those glittery UGG boots, and Jay-Z. But I guess we’re all peas in a pod, now. Who knew?

One of the items Oprah mentioned was our partnership with Bing to help them deliver $1 Million to public schools. They’ve been exceedingly generous all year in their support of teachers and students throughout the country, and continue to work tirelessly to engage new people in discussion about our country’s public education system. We truly cannot thank them enough for their efforts.  They also filmed this great interview with our founder Charles Best a few weeks back, which is surely worth a look.

We’re told many people use Oprah’s Favorite Things as a personal shopping list for the holidays. If that’s the case, and you came here looking for DonorsChoose.org gift ideas – good job. You have come to precisely the right place. Our holiday gift cards are adorable, heartwarming, tax-deductible, and always ship free. Pretty sure only one of those things is true about the aforementioned UGG boots. (Hint: it’s not “adorable,” “heartwarming,” or “tax-deductible.”)

  • Oprah, I am speechless that you have chosen DonorsChoose as one of you endevors!!!!! You are awesome!!! I would absolutely love for you to sponsor my cause in teaching students in an after school program in learning good eating habits, being able to read nutrition labels, and creating healthy afterschool snacks. Kids today eat unhealthy snacks at home sitting in front of tv’s. I want to change that, and I hope you want to change that mindset, too. I teach at an small inner city school, whose students are in proverty and living in the projects. They deserve living in a better place, not that I can provide that, but I can help them make better choices. I really wish you can consider my proposal in helping these students make positive choices in at least eating habits. Thank you so much for your interest in DonorsChoose.

You are an amazing woman and I thank you for thinking of teachers because when you help our students, you help us do a better job and we know they are worth every penny your spot light will generate. • Dear Oprah,
Thank you so very much for your generous support, with BING!, of donorschoose.org. My 26 lively learners have benefitted from the generosity of donors from across the country as we read our TIME FOR KIDS news magazine every week. Connecting with current events while building reading comprehension skills with high interest nonfiction text is one of the highlights of our week.
Intrepid explorers that they are, they strive to join the 21st century with our latest project request. We excitedly map our donors, feeling incredibly blessed with every dollar donated.
We have a motto in our learning colony – harness the power of your talent to do good in this world. Oprah, thank you so very much for being the public embodiment of this value for the past 25 years. As a public school teacher who invests over $3,000 annually in supplies ranging from paper, crayons, coloring pencils, books, winter coats and boots, hats, mittens, and pencils because I frankly consider it an honor to teach/work with children on their learning journey every day (and I am thankful I have a job), I am humbled that you choose to recognize what thousands of others do each and every day. Honored and humbled. May you continue to inspire others.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

  • Oprah…What a wonderful act of kindness from you!!!…I have been teaching since 1979…Although many winters have passed since, I feel as blessed as the first day I entered a classroom full of inquisitive, active, and extremely curious little ones…I consider teaching a “calling”, not a “job”, and because of this, digging deep in my own pocket has been part of what I have always done for the generations I have taught and still teach…When I was introduced to DonorsChoose.org, I couldn’t believe it…I became soooo hooked that I couldn’t stop writing projects…I am so thankful for this organization and all the donors that have donated to my projects…Getting fully funded is the best feeling a teacher like me can ask for…Seeing the excitement in my students’ faces makes want to write more projects…I’m soooo happy to know that YOU have joined our fight against “Academic Poverty”…We need all the help we can get when it comes to getting the materials that will enrich the lives of the children we teach…Thank you so very, very, very much for supporting us!!!…Here’s a little chant for you…Oprah, Oprah, she’s so cool…She’s supporting Public Schools…Oprah, Oprah, she’s so neat…Helping our kids succeed…Oprah, Oprah, what a boost…Joining our DonorsChoose…Oprah, Oprah, thanks so much…For supporting what we love…Thank you once again!!!…

  • Donors Choose has changed the lives of my students. The gifts they have helped provide to my classroom are beyond measure – for how do you measure a child’s excitement for learning and drive for success? How do you measure the curiosity in their eyes and the gratitude in their smiles? How do you measure the pride in my heart to see my students rise above the poverty, crime, and violence of their neighborhood to earn a seat in college? Thank you Donors Choose for the hard work you do every day to make our jobs as teachers easier. Thank you Oprah for recognizing the importance of giving EVERY child a chance to succeed.

  • Dearest Oprah,
I am thrilled beyond words! After receiving a donation today for one of my Donors Choose projects, I read that WE are one of YOUR FAVORITE THINGS! Earlier this year, when one of my projects was funded, mostly by a company hundreds of miles away, I realized how much people really do care about education and about children everywhere! And now, to be One of Your Favorite Things is like a dream come true! I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with twenty precious at-risk four year old boys and girls. Their parents love them and want the very best for them. Many of their parents work hard, some with two jobs, to support their families. I wish everyone had the chance to work with these children and their families. Several years ago, on the first day of school, a little girl told me that she had been on “The Oprah Show”. She was so convincing, with her outgoing personality and her gifted imagination, that I almost believed her. I called her “Oprah” for the rest of the year and loved hearing her stories everyday. There are many little “Oprahs” waiting for someone to give them a chance for success. Thank you, Oprah, Donors Choose, and everyone for making our dreams for our children a reality!

My middle school students need literature to broaden their knowledge and comprehension, but their disabilities are a factor in their learning. DonorsChoose.org is a fabulous organization who is giving me a chance to receive high interest, low readability novels for my Language Arts classroom. • Oprah, thank you so much for supporting education in America. You have such a kind, giving, and generous spirit. Every dime that you give to teachers to help educate students will not go unnoticed or unrewarded. It is difficult to teach in a high poverty school. The last text book in my Anatomy class to be adopted was in 1994. Our schools do not have the money needed to purchase consumable materials in my science classroom. Year after year I send thousands of dollars out of my own pocket to provide a quality science experience for my students. However, parents and community members have no idea how much time or money I spend. When community members offer their used science equipment to me, I feel like a little child Christmas day opening presents. Donors Choose is one way for the community to get involved and help teachers provide an awesome experience that students will remember for a lifetime. Your support of Donors Choose will shed light on the great need for simple equipment needed in our classrooms. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you always.

I clicked the link because I am a strong advocate for the inner city youth here in Chicago. I was once in their shoes and my resources were my family. Today’s youth barely has that anymore.
Once I clicked I saw the request for needs within the inner city schools. I am already a giver to those who cant afford private schools in the area but I wanted to find a way to impact those in the public schools as well and by george this is it!!!

  • Congratulations on getting a nod from Oprah! Thank you for supporting teachers and students across the country. You are a Godsend.

Thank you so much Oprah for sponsoring Donors Choose! If it wasn’t for Donors Choose, I wouldn’t have some of the projects in my classroom. The students get so excited when the projects come into our classroom. I’m so happy that Oprah is helping out teachers.

  • Oprah, thank you so much for supporting public education in America. Thank you for giving to teachers to help educate students in high poverty schools. With hopes and prayers, I hope to help build our a literacy closet for our rural area elementary school. Our school does not have the money to purchase the materials needed to help supply this closet. Donors Choose is one way the needs of our students could be met, by receiving resources that will help in promoting literacy in our school. With these resources we can help children learn to read and promote reading growth. Thank you again for making others aware of Donor Choose.

  • WOW, Oprah is the BOMB! If everyone who loves Oprah donated $10, ALL of our projects would be fully funded! Come on people, challenge your friends and family to give back to classrooms in need! Help us get the things we need in order to do our jobs more effectively. Thanks to all who have already given too! May the power of Oprah be with us all!

  • Oprah,
My English Language Learners and I sincerely appreciate your support of Donors Choose. My ELL’s need reading support at home because many of their parents are not able to read them books in English. These Tag readers, will help my students be able to read stories in English and grow their English vocabulary. Again, we are so grateful to you for your help.

  • What a fantastic way to spread the word fast. By making this one of your favorite things, Oprah, so many people realized that the three dollars spent on coffee could be put into our education system to support our future. We teachers always spend a great portion of our income back in our classrooms because we really recognize that we need what we need to make it engaging. Thanks again for spreading the word and support. We certainly wouldn’t have these success stories without these supporters.

  • Oprah, you honored me on your show recognizing teachers several years ago when a former student wrote a letter to you. That experience encouraged me to go back into teaching after my own children were grown. Now, I have the privilege to work with school children, again! Thanks for that and Thanks for your Donor’s Choose support!
