This morning, at the South by Southwest panel titled “Donations 2.0?“, an amazing thing happened. By using Twitter, the panel audience mobilized to fund a local Austin, TX classroom music project. Check out how it happened:
This was the call to action:
@yoavlurie: Let’s fund Austin @donorschoose music proj @katiebisbee talked abt b4 end of #donate2 session http://bit.ly/aWD42F
Then the other attendees started to spread the word:
@laurenbacon: RT @yoavlurie: Let’s fund Austin @donorschoose music proj @katiebisbee talked abt b4 end of #donate2 session http://bit.ly/aWD42F
@reubenthiessen: RT @yoavlurie: Let’s fund Austin @donorschoose music proj @katiebisbee talked abt b4 end of #donate2 session http://bit.ly/aWD42F
And then they started to donate:

@reubenthiessen: I just gave $25 to @donorschoose project http://bit.ly/aWD42F #donate2 let’s get this done during this session
@devonvsmith: I just gave $10 to @donorschoose project http://bit.ly/aWD42F #donate2 let’s get this done during this session
And then the celebration began!
@laurenbacon: We did it! Nice work, everyone. http://bit.ly/aFlZIh @donorschoose #donate2 #sxsw
@aolanoff: RT @sbosm: Cool #sxsw moment: audience gave enough $ during #donate2 session to fulfill @donorschoose austin classroom music project
THANK YOU to the panel attendees for bringing this project to life! You can already see the thank-you note from the teacher. You can tell Mr. V is inspired to keep using DonorsChoose.org to request resources for his music students!
And THANK YOU to our fellow panelists, below. From left to right, Ruth-Anne Renaud from Opportunity International, Michael Cervino from Beaconfire Consulting, Katie Bisbee from DonorsChoose.org, Skylar Woodward from Kiva, and Milo Sybrant from Amnesty International:

Congrats! Thrilled to see that this technique still works and that people aren’t suffering from cause fatigue. I used this approach two years ago from the stage at Gnomdex and we raised enough money to send a young Cambodian woman to college!
