Adam Lambert fans have already given a quarter million dollars to arts and music projects on DonorsChoose.org—and they are at it again! Adam’s birthday is today (January 29, 2010) and since he is turning 28, many of his fans and fan groups are encouraging members to give $28 (or more!) on this special Happy Birthday GivingPage.

Fans are also leaving birthday messages for Adam in their post-donation comments, like this donor: Taliesin_Girl from West Hollywood, CA; “I gave in response to Adam Lambert’s request that his fans give to charity rather than give him gifts for his birthday. Happy birthday Adam!”

Adam Lambert has encouraged his fans several times this past year to give to schools on DonorsChoose.org in lieu of gifts for him. Thank you for all who continue to help students across the country get the resources they need to learn—or to thrive in music and theater, like Adam!

Teachers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have the opportunity to bring arts, science and history projects to life for their students thanks to a partnership between the Arts & Science Council (ASC) and DonorsChoose.org.

Citizen Philanthropists who donate to arts, science and history-based projects submitted by CMS teachers at http://www.donorschoose.org/asc, will have their gift doubled by a dollar-for-dollar match from ASC.

The $30,000 matching offer from ASC means $60,000 in art, science and history lessons will come to life in Charlotte, North Carolina!

“Education and participation in the arts, science and history are vital to the development of our children,” said ASC President Scott Provancher.  “This is an innovative way for ASC to help support our dedicated teachers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in their efforts to increase student achievement.”

“DonorsChoose.org is thrilled to partner with the Arts & Science Council in helping bring to life innovative arts, science and history projects in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools,” said DonorsChoose.org Vice President Katie Bisbee. “It is equally exciting that anyone can join us in this effort and double their donations at http://www.donorschoose.org/asc.”

We want to recognize vendors that met or exceeded our service expectations in January, one of our peak seasons for purchasing classrooms resources for projects. Congratulations!

DonorsChoose.org has an ordering spike in January because we hold orders through December so materials do not arrive at closed schools during the winter holiday season. We’ve sent over 10,000 orders this month and rely on our vendors to help serve our teachers and donors most effectively.

We want to thank these vendors for their commitment to delivering resources to high-need classrooms.

In the largest employee giving campaign in the 10-year history of DonorsChoose.org, 4,331 employees from Credit Suisse chose to donate to classroom projects in need as part of this year’s Holiday Charity Initiative.

The average donation was incredibly generous – $150 per employee, 75%  more than our average donation.  Over 100 employees gave more than $1,000 each.  Overall, Credit Suisse employees from 25 states gave to classroom projects in their own backyards and across the country.

Credit Suisse employees chose to support a large range of classroom projects, from basic classroom needs like pencils and paper, to a $20,000 field trip to Europe for low-income middle school students.  Employees made many inspirational comments to the classrooms they supported, such as:

  •  ”I gave to this project because I am a mother of two boys and have  many young loved ones.  I want to support our children and be one more helping hand.  Together we can do it.  They’re counting on us!”
  • “I gave to this project because my company Credit Suisse is a strong supporter of giving back to our community, and helping its employees find meaningful ways to contribute.”
  •  ”I remember every great teacher that inspired me throughout my childhood and I am incredibly happy that I can contribute to the learning and education of our youth.  Keep up the good work and I hope you are able to inspire these kids as much as I was inspired by my teachers.”

Below is a heartfelt thank-you note from a teacher whose project, “College Bound“, that Credit Suisse employees funded:

Credit Suisse, on behalf of the students and teachers we serve, THANK YOU!

That’s right folks, the Denver Chapter of Mustaches for Kids is embarking on its second year of follicular fun and fundraising for local Colorado classrooms.  The excitement begins this Thursday, January 14th, as the men of Denver embark on their facial hair journey with a clean (shaven) slate. In its inaugural year, the Denver chapter of Mustaches for Kids brought in over $3,500 worth of classroom materials for students, and the chapter hopes to bring even more resources to schools this year.

If you are located in Denver and your upper lip wants to be a part of the adventure, weekly checkpoints will be held at Tavern Wash Park on Thursday evenings.  You can also check out the Denver Mustaches for Kids Facebook group for more information and updates.  Or, if you are not quite ready to dedicate your facial hair to the cause, you can always help these fearless and charitable growers by going here and supporting one of the classroom projects selected by Denver growers.

The Ravalli Republic recently featured The Greater Ravalli Foundation and its efforts to bring educational materials to Ravalli County classrooms. Inspired by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Double Your Impact program supporting high need and rural high schools, the Greater Ravalli Foundation is partnering with DonorsChoose.org to help fund college prep projects in Ravalli County, Montana.

So, if you are a high school teacher in Ravalli County, now is a great time to submit a classroom project to www.donorschoose.org/teachers. As the Foundation spokesperson explained to the Ravalli Republic, “small amounts of money can be donated by people and when combined with donations from other people, it really can make things happen. It’s a wonderful way to engage in the community.”
