Calling all iPhone users: There’s a new iPhone app called CauseWorld. It lets you help the world while you shop. And the kicker? It’s completely free and features DonorsChoose.org among a few well-known charities!

How It Works:

1) You walk into a store, pull out your phone, and check in. No purchase required.

2) By checking in, you earn points from CauseWorld sponsors.

3) You then give those points to a specific cause. For DonorsChoose.org, you can help provide laptop computers to an elementary school class in Chicago!

CauseWorld is available in the iPhone App Store now, with an Android version coming soon. To download the app, visit CauseWorld today.

For the second year in a row, Chicago men will be growing some ‘stachtastic facial hair and teaming up with DonorsChoose.org to raise money for public schools in need. This year’s Mustaches for Kids (M4K) Chicago grow-a-thon kicked off with a shaving party on November 16th. Now that the playing field has been leveled, these brave men will compete to grow prize-worthy ‘staches, while raising pledges for innovative classroom projects on DonorsChoose.org.  Follow the activity on the M4K leaderboard and watch us go head to head with other ‘stache-loving cities (San Francisco, watch your back, Chicago is throwing down in a big and hairy way this year!)

For those of you thinking “I can’t grow a ‘stache, but I want to participate. How can I help support Mustaches for Kids Chicago and DonorsChoose.org?”….. Make a pledge to a Chicago Grower and/or come join us at ‘Stache bash 2009 on Sunday, December 13th from 3-6pm at Schubas Tavern in Chicago. Visit the Mustaches for Kids – Chicago website for more details

May the best ‘stache win!

On Tuesday, Matthew Bishop, The Economist’s New York Bureau Chief and co-author of the highly acclaimed book Philanthrocapitalism, moderated a panel of three social entrepreneurs on the subject of giving.  The conversation highlighted innovative strategies for giving and concluded with an exciting Q&A session for panelists Lauren Bush, founder of FEED Projects, Scott Harrison, founder of Charity:Water, and our own Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org.  Bishop provides a fantastic summary of the event on the Philanthrocapitalism blog, and DonorsChoose.org is thrilled to have been included in both the discussion, as well as in the book itself.

Interested in winning a free copy of Philanthrocapitalism signed by Bill Gates, and a lunch with Matthew Bishop in New York?  Enter the sweepstakes on The Economist’s Facebook page.

The devilishly handsome and charitable Growers of Mustaches for Kids Baltimore outdid themselves this season, raising even more money and supporting even more local kids than last year.

On behalf of the DonorsChoose.org team and the more than 8,000 students supported, huge hairy thanks go out to all of the Growers of M4K – Baltimore! Guided by its valiant leader Pranav “Master P’Stache” Saha, the chapter beat last season’s record by raising more than $24,000 to provide much needed educational resources to Baltimore students.  Mr. Mark Gaither topped the fundraising charts by single-‘stachedly rallying 67 donors.

High ‘Stache Honors went to Nick “Dr. Fuzzenstein” Giardina whose magic mushrooms and star power invincibility crowned him ”Baltimore’s Sweetest Stache.”

See more GREAT pictures from Baltimore’s Stache Bash and learn how you can contribute to the continuance of M4K – Baltimore by purchasing one of their brilliant t-shirts at www.m4kbaltimore.org!

THANK YOU BALTIMORE GROWERS!

If you thought that growing a Mustache for kids was a sacrifice, the Growers of Mustaches for Kids – San Francisco beg you to think again.

Check out today’s San Francisco Examiner article, “Throwing caution to the wind to benefit schools” to read about how a few San Fran Growers are taking the competition to a whole to level by also SHAVING THEIR HEADS. Yes. You read correctly.

There’s only a few hours left until M4K-San Francisco’s season culminates with its ‘Stache Bash (8pm tonight at the Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell St., San Francisco).

If you can’t be at the ‘Stache Bash tonight, make a donation to classrooms chosen by these Growers HERE. What more can they do?!

The DonorsChoose.org team would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to Neuberger Berman (www.nb.com) for volunteering their time in our offices on December 9, 2009. Not only were they a lively, fun-loving group of volunteers whose enthusiasm filled the office, they got so into the process of screening and preparing classroom feedback that they didn’t want to leave! THANK YOU Neuberger Berman for your time and energy!

If your company is interested in volunteering in our NYC office, please contact Associate Director, Yaritza Olmeda, at yaritza (at) DonorsChoose (dot) org.

Gabriel Adiv was the top fundraiser for M4K last year and is currently this year’s frontrunner in San Francisco, but only by a whisker. While his mustache is “in full force,” he’s a bit nervous about holding onto his number one spot as fundraising has been a little bit tougher this year. However, this isn’t stopping him from sharing some of the secrets to his success with some of his competitors:

  1. Be persistent. Gabe sends weekly emails to friends and family, posts weekly to his blog, and regularly updates his Facebook with his stache status, funded projects, teacher comments, and pictures of other “real” mustachioed men. And at the bottom of each email/blog post/Facebook update is a link to his site where you can give.
  2. Thank people – publicly. This may be the most important part of Gabe’s weekly communication. At the beginning of every blog post and email he lists all of the people that gave in the previous week. Great acknowledgement for those amazing donors who have helped fund a DonorsChoose.org project and a little peer pressure for the procrastinators.

This year Gabe is growing for art and music projects for kids with disabilities and you can help push him securely in the lead by donating to one of his projects.

Thanks to Gabe and all of the fearless mustache growers for your amazing efforts to help classrooms!

Growers in Baltimore and Chicago have just a few days left in their seasons, and it’s an all out sprint to the ‘Stache Bash to see which city can do the most good for local classrooms and KIDS.

In one corner, we have Baltimore. It’s only the second year that this scrappy chapter has flexed its Mustache muscle… and they’re already giving longstanding chapters a run for their whiskers. They’ve raised over $18,000 so far this year and they’re pulling out all the ‘stache to beat last year’s $24,500 raised.  If you live in Baltimore OR you’re just a sucker for the underdog, support these Baltimore Mustache Growers!

In the other corner, we have the heavyweight Chicago chapter. They claimed victory over their Baltimore brethren last year by raising over $28,700 for Chicago students in need. They’ve raised more than $16,250 so far this year but they’re not about to let Baltimore take this one without a fight! Help Chicago keep its crown – support Chicago ‘staches!

Support Mustaches. Support Kids!

For any of you who participated in the DonorsChoose.org Social Media Challenge, you already know that HP is a strong supporter of teachers and students. Now, our heroes at HP are partnering with DonorsChoose.org to bring technology resources to public school classrooms!

Thanks to HP’s generosity, teachers across the country who submit classroom projects that request only HP products will be eligible for a “Double Your Impact” match. Any project posted to DonorsChoose.org that meets the above criteria will receive 50% funding via this offer once other donors choose to join in and fund the rest of the project. Funding will be spent on a first come, first served basis until the grant is spent out.

So, for all you teachers who have been dreaming of an HP printer or scientific calculators for your students, or if you just need to replace some HP ink cartridges to create more tangible learning experiences, now is the perfect time to submit your project idea! To get started and take advantage of this great offer, submit your HP technology project at www.donorschoose.org/teachers. Teachers, for the best and most up-to-date selection of HP products, try Quill and CDW. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, try one of our other vendors, such as Best Buy. Big thanks to HP for helping us to bring learning to life!

The DonorsChoose.org team would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Growers of Mustaches for Kids – New York. They crushed their own single-season record from last year by:

  • Raising over $85,000
  • Mobilizing more than 1,148 donors
  • Supporting the education of 43,931 public school students

Saturday’s ‘Stache Bash was a celebration of all things mustachioed, and chock full of fierce Mustache competition and fun (think: tuxedo t-shirts). It was the perfect end to a record-setting growing season.

Congratulations to the new reigning Mustache King of New York Nick Leavins and to all of the Growers who generously gave of their time and upper lips for this four-week Mustache journey!

Until next ’stache
