As part of Stephen Colbert’s upcoming trip to the Persian Gulf to entertain our troops, he is also working to support the troops back at home. Colbert has once again partnered with DonorsChoose.org, this time to raise money for classroom projects at schools around the nation that teach the kids of deployed military parents.
You can join Stephen Colbert in making your donation in honor of one of the five branches of the armed services at www.donorschoose.org/colbertwantsyou.
See the April 27th and the May 14th video clips from The Colbert Report on Comedy Central to see Colbert’s announcements about his challenge.

Sorry, Katie, just using you as an in. Please don’t tell me that government schools aren’t getting enough tax dollars. Just using the NATIONAL average of over 8K per student in 2004(!), do the math. Where is all that money going? Union corruption? Overpaid (and overpraised, while being represented as underappreciated and overworked by the LSM – check out their salaries) teachers? God bless the good ones, but we’re being extorted on behalf of the undereducated and incompetent ones. My 3 kids went to private school for slightly more than it costs one to go to a government school, and now I’m paying less per year for the three of them to attend leading universities than taxpayers are paying per government school student per year. Oh, and I still paid taxes as if my kids were going to government schools. Wake up. Do your homework. Do the math. There’s a bumper sticker that says, “Won’t it be great when the public schools have enough money and the military will have to hold bake sales?” The federal government, all 50 states, and every municipality tax and have programs for education. It is solely the responsibility of the federal government to defend the nation’s people and the only government which taxes for such. I’m looking for the bumper sticker that says, “Won’t it be great when the federal goernment is out of the education business and we have all the money we need for national defense?”

You stated in your post that it cost you more to send your kids to a private school that it costs to send a child to public school? Maybe public schools should charge what your private school charges and they would have enough?
When you attend a university there are twice, three times or more students in a classroom. Therefore the cost should be less. The students who go to universities are adults and need less guidance. I am a member of the NEA and the dues are paid with my own money not tax dollars. If the government is good enough to defend us are they not good enough to educate us? I admit that public schools are not perfect but are private ones? Schools can account for every dollar they spend. Wouldn’t it be nice if our government could do the same?
I know many teachers who work many hours they are not paid for. Many teachers leave their careers because they have no time for their own family.
If you really want to talk about overpraised and overpaid what about celebrities, athletes, and CEO’s.
If the government was out of education who would pay to educate the poor? You?

Thank you so much Stephen Colbert for supporting our troops and our children. I admire you for what you have done. Your voice has helped so many students and teachers who need help and who want to add creativity in teaching and learning.

Well the fact of the matter is that there is NOT enough money getting into the classrooms for students to get a quality education. It is really upsetting as a teacher, student or parent when you know you are not receiving all of the resources you possibly can. These children are our future and we need to educate for them as best we can. Using programs like donorschoose.org people are putting real money and real resources into the classroom that need it the most. I really wish more people knew about this program because it is REALEST program out there. Every dollar spent goes directly into purchasing something that a classroom really needs.
