“What a Difference a Day Makes” is the WE TV Volunteer campaign motto and now DonorsChoose.org knows why!

WE TV employees joined our growing list of corporate volunteer groups on May 20th spending time at our office to process classroom feedback packages from teachers. WE TV is the premier channel for women’s programming including signature series like “Bridezillas,” DonorsChoose.org staff favorite “Platinum Weddings” and the documentary series “High School Confidential.”

“WE Volunteer” is WE Empowers Women’s newly launched three-year campaign dedicated to celebrating the power of volunteerism. The campaign is dedicated to empowering women and the people in their lives to volunteer for a one day to causes and organizations that they are passionate about.

A group of 20 WE TV employees, including General Manager Kim Martin, joined the DonorsChoose.org staff at our NYC headquarters.

Goldman Sachs employees sure know how to volunteer! As part of Goldman Sachs’ Community TeamWorks initiative, eight Goldman Sachs employees spent an exciting afternoon volunteering their time at DonorsChoose.org’s NYC headquarters.

Goldman Sachs is a leading global financial services firm providing investment banking, securities and investment management services to a wide array of clients across the globe. They are also committed to volunteering in communities where they work and live through unique partnerships with nonprofit organizations. In fact through Community TeamWorks, the office of corporate engagement at Goldman gives ALL employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local and international nonprofit organizations.

Eight employees toured the DonorsChoose.org office then volunteered their time to process classroom feedback packages from teachers. They also joined the DonorsChoose.org staff and sat in on a talk from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark!

THANK YOU Goldman Sachs for your time and energy!

Kristen Anderson, a third grade teacher in Seattle, wants to make sure that her students are inspired to learn.  She hopes to teach the class about history in a way that they can relate to the characters and understand the context – in other words, through the historical fiction book discussing the Great Depression, Song of the Trees.  Once the students read the book, they will meet in book clubs to share their thoughts and questions about the story, connect to the characters and explore the larger themes of family, culture, and social justice.

Fox 13 spoke with Mrs. Anderson recently and learned that, due to funding decisions, four classrooms will have to share one set of supplies next year! The teacher is hoping to receive 30 copies of Song of the Trees so that each student will have his or her own copy to study.  Her DonorsChoose.org proposal, Times are Hard Honey, expires soon and only needs $154 to bring this project to life! You can check out Mrs. Anderson’s classroom on Fox 13 here (click on the Lowell Elementary story).

As part of our new DonorsChoose.org Speaker Series, we were fortunate to have Craig Newmark, the founder of craigslist, come speak to our NY office, while our regional team members watched over webcam.  Craig told us the story of founding craigslist, shared his thoughts on his work supporting nonprofits and gave us a few great stories about craigslist customer service.

We were glad to have the chance to thank Craig Newmark for introducing DonorsChoose.org to Stephen Colbert and for everything he has done to support our organization in the last few years!

You can follow Craig Newmark on Twitter, become his fan on Facebook and read his blog.

As part of Stephen Colbert’s upcoming trip to the Persian Gulf to entertain our troops, he is also working to support the troops back at home.  Colbert has once again partnered with DonorsChoose.org, this time to raise money for classroom projects at schools around the nation that teach the kids of deployed military parents.

You can join Stephen Colbert in making your donation in honor of one of the five branches of the armed services at www.donorschoose.org/colbertwantsyou.

Darius Rucker Fans & Friends:

Capitol Records Nashville artist Darius Rucker and the well-known voice of the Grammy-winning group Hootie & The Blowfish doesn’t want presents for his birthday this year.

Instead, Rucker is asking fans and friends to support classroom requests from South Carolina’s high-poverty schools along the I-95 corridor. You may remember that President Obama turned America’s attention to just one of these schools, J.V. Martin Junior High School in Dillon County, S.C., during his first State of the Union speech.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina on May 13, 1966, Rucker hopes this birthday will be an opportunity to improve the education that high-poverty students in his home state receive by asking you to support one of the classroom requests posted on this page.

CELEBRATE WITH DARIUS RUCKER HERE!

Thank you in advance for helping to make this Darius Rucker’s Give-Back birthday!

Students at MacArthur Elementary are learning valuable lessons about preserving the environment thanks to materials received through DonorsChoose.org. Ms. Cummings’s kindergarten classroom now has recycling bins and their own compost bin, which gives the students a chance to get their hands dirty while providing lessons about biology and recycling.

The environmentally friendly kindergarteners caught the attention of a reporter at The News on 6 in Tulsa who visited their classroom last week. The students showed their enthusiasm for the creepy crawlers that ultimately break down food scraps into healthy soil.

The green lesson plans are clearly making an impact on the students. According to Ms. Cummings, “Parents come to me all the time telling me my child is on me all the time about recycling paper and plastics.”

In addition to helping teach the kids about preserving the planet, DonorsChoose.org grants have boosted their reading skills and introduced them to cultures halfway around the world.

Fund a classroom project in honor of your mom. It’s the perfect Mother’s Day gift for the world’s best teacher.

Your mom gets photos of the project taking place in the classroom, and a letter from the teacher explaining what a difference the project has made.

Plus, seeing you support public school education in her honor? She’ll know she taught you well!
