We are a union school in the heart of Vermont’s most agricultural landscape. Union schools in Vermont funnel students from a large land area with a small population. One thing that our students have in common, no matter what part of the county they live in, is a tradition of farming and being strongly connected to the land. Twelve to fourteen year old children crave hands-on learning; however, this connection to the working landscape makes our 7th and 8th graders particularly suited for building and design. Many of our students are born to ‘tinker’ and whenever they get an opportunity to expand their view of what traditional learning is, they are thrilled. They love to solve problems and build things. Time and again hands-on design-build projects are what engage our students the most...and I spend a lot of time as a teacher trying to figure out ways to get my students excited about school.
