My brilliant, dynamic, and inquisitive students are eager to learn and to move to the "Blue" (Advanced/Above Grade Level) in reading. In order to do so, my students need a myriad of opportunities to engage with texts in all forms. We read the news daily from the SmartBoard, and each scholar has his/her own "book bag" filled with personalized, student-selected books that are used to read for over an hour each school day. Our inner-city, high-poverty school has 99% of our scholars receiving Free and Reduced Meals, and many of my scholars do not own books of their own at home. This makes our work in school even more critical, as it provides our funny, brilliant, and resilient scholars with opportunities to explore new worlds through the pages of a book. Over 75% of my scholars began the year at least two grade levels behind in reading, and most of them have improved at least one grade level in reading already throughout this school year.
